Incorrect Installation of RM Base May Cause Insufficient Processor Cooling

Symptoms Resulting in

  • System running slow, including unexpected performance problem.
  • System may fail to properly shutdown.
  • System turns off after a short period of time.
  • Intel® Active Monitor reporting processor temperature too high.
  • Processor Retention Mechanism base breakage during integration.

Summary
Ensure that the processor-fan heatsink retention mechanism (RM) base is installed correctly with Intel® Desktop Board D850MV, Intel® Desktop Board D850MD, Intel® Desktop Board D845WN, and Intel® Desktop Board D845HV. An incorrectly installed RM base could result in insufficient cooling of the processor. Above symptoms maybe a result of incorrectly installed RM base.

Details
While integrating the RM base onto the desktop board, one or more of the four fasteners from the RM may slightly dislodge from the RM. The dislodged fastener will severely impede normal cooling of the processor if not corrected.

The picture below illustrates an RM with the fastener dislodged (left) and an RM with a correctly engaged fastener (right).

The picture illustrates both incorrectly (left) and correctly (right) installed RM bases.

RM with Fastener Correctly Engaged

To ensure that the RM base is correctly installed, follow the "Installing the Processor Fan Heatsink Base" instructions detailed in the Quick Reference guides that are included with Intel Desktop Boards D850MV, D850MD, D845WN, and D845HV. After installation is complete, gently pull up on each corner of the RM. If any of the corners lift, then the fastener at that corner has dislodged and the RM is not installed correctly.

The Quick Reference guide is also available for download:

Download the Quick Reference Guide: After installation is complete, gently pull up on each corner of the RM. If any of the corners lift, then the fastener at that corner has dislodged and the RM is not installed correctly. Use the illustrations for properly seated fasteners.

To resolve the problem, remove the white pushpins from the corners with fasteners that have dislodged. Then, re-engage the fasteners by pressing down on them until they are flush with the RM base. Once the fasteners have been re-engaged, re-insert and press down on the pushpins to lock-in the RM.

Incorrectly installed RM base can result in damage to the Thermal Interface Material located on the underside of the heatsink assembly. If you were experiencing one of the above symptoms, be sure to inspect the Thermal Interface Material to ensure no damage has occurred. Damaged Thermal Interface Material can also impede cooling of your Intel® processor.

Damaged Thermal Interface Material
Thermal Interface Material damaged as a result of a loose fastener can impede cooling of your Intel® processor. Follow the instructions above to ensure that the RM base is installed properly. Contact Intel® Customer Support for assistance and request a stick of thermal grease, which is the replacement thermal interface material for this Intel® processor. Below is a procedure to ensure proper removal of the old thermal interface material, and replacement using the new thermal interface material.
  1. Open the socket handle (A).
  2. Install the processor by carefully aligning the pins to the socket (B).
  3. Close the socket handle (C).
  4. Remove all old thermal interface material from bottom of heatsink (D).
  5. Apply the entire tube of thermal interface material (thermal grease) to the top of the processor (E).
  6. Re-install the heatsink assembly following instructions available with your Boxed Pentium® 4 processor.

Broken Retention Mechanism Base
Retention mechanism base breaking may be attributed to the fastener not being fully seated. Fasteners not fully seated can allow the RM base to flex while activating the heatsink retention mechanism. If this occurs please contact your place of purchase or Intel Customer Support for assistance.
