Ultra ATA/100 Support The Intel® 845 chipset supports previous Ultra ATA/33 & Ultra ATA/66 transfer rates, as well as the new Ultra ATA/100 transfer rate. Hard drives supporting Ultra ATA/100 transfer rates implement higher spindle speeds, such as 7200 RPM, and have a larger onboard buffer size to maximize available bandwidth on the IDE channel.
Ultra ATA/100 and Ultra ATA/66 Support In order to enable Ultra ATA/100 and Ultra ATA/66 support for IDE devices on the Intel® Desktop Boards D845HV and D845WN, the following are necessary:
- Ultra ATA/100 or Ultra ATA/66 IDE Device Capable
- 40-pin, 80-conductor cable
- Operating system support for Direct Memory Access (DMA) transfers.
Some operating system drivers may not support unique DMA speed settings for two IDE drives configured on the same IDE channel. Therefore, it is recommended that IDE devices compatible with Ultra ATA/100 and Ultra ATA/66 should be configured on one IDE channel using the 40-pin, 80-conductor cable, and IDE devices not compatible with Ultra ATA/100 and Ultra ATA/66 should be configured on the second IDE channel.
The Intel® Ultra ATA Storage Driver automatically enables fast Ultra ATA transfers for a variety of ATA/ATAPI mass storage devices such as hard disk drives and CD-ROMs. This driver has been designed to take advantage of the latest Intel Ultra ATA controller features to improve both storage subsystem performance and overall system performance.
