Operating system installation

Requirements for installing an operating system on an Intel® NUC:

  • Operating system (OS) image on either a USB flash drive or on a CD/DVD.
  • Fully integrated Intel NUC, with a mouse and keyboard connected.
  • USB optical drive (only if using an installation CD/DVD).
  • Internet connection.

If you have the Intel® NUC Kit DN2820FYKH or DE3815TYKHE, first see the BIOS information section (below).

Installing Microsoft Windows*

  1. Connect the USB flash drive or USB optical drive that contains the Windows installation files.
  2. Power on the Intel NUC.
  3. At the prompt during boot, press F10 to open the boot menu and select the installation drive.
  4. Follow the instructions of the Windows installer.
  5. After the Windows installation is complete, unplug the installation device.
  6. Connect to the Internet.
  7. Install all required Windows updates (optional).
  8. Download and install the latest Intel NUC drivers from Download Center
  9. Installation is complete.

Installing Linux*

  1. Connect the USB flash drive (recommended) or USB optical drive that contains the Linux installation files.
  2. Power on the Intel NUC.
  3. At the prompt during boot, press F10 to open the boot menu and select the USB drive.
  4. Follow the instructions of the operating system installer.

BIOS version information for Intel® NUC Kit DN2820FYKH
This Intel NUC originally shipped from the factory with BIOS version 0015. You must first upgrade the system BIOS to version 0025 or later to successfully install an operating system.

BIOS changes needed for Intel NUC Kits DN2820FYKH and DE3815TYKHE
Certain BIOS settings should be confirmed, depending on what OS you plan to install.

  1. Press F2 when prompted during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Press F9 to set all BIOS options to default values.
  3. Select Advanced.
    1. On the Devices and Peripherals > SATA menu, Chipset SATA Mode to AHCI.
    2. On the Boot > Boot Priority menu, in the Legacy Boot Priority pane, Legacy Boot is disabled (unchecked).
    3. On the Boot > Boot Configuration menu, in the UEFI Boot pane, OS Selection is set to Windows 8.X.
  4. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS Setup.
Proceed with the installation of the operating system.
Windows 7*
  1. Press F2 when prompted during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Press F9 to set all BIOS options to default values.
  3. Select Advanced.
    1. On the Devices and Peripherals > SATA menu, Chipset SATA Mode is set to AHCI.
    2. On the Boot > Boot Priority menu, in the Legacy Boot Priority pane, Legacy Boot is enabled (checked).
    3. On the Boot > Boot Configuration menu, in the UEFI Boot pane, OS Selection is set to Windows 7.
  4. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS Setup.
Proceed with the installation of the operating system.
OpenElec

Tested with the development build at OpenElec.

  1. Press F2 when prompted during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Press F9 to set all BIOS options to default values.
  3. Select Advanced.
    1. On the Devices and Peripherals > SATA menu, Chipset SATA Mode is set to AHCI.
    2. On the Devices and Peripherals > USB menu, USB Legacy is enabled (checked).
    3. On the Devices and Peripherals > Video menu, IGD Minimum Memory is set to 512 MB.
    4. On the Boot > Boot Priority menu:
      1. UEFI Boot is disabled (unchecked).
      2. Legacy Boot is enabled (checked).
    5. On the Boot > Boot Configuration menu, USB under Boot Devices is enabled (checked).
  4. Press F10 to save your changes and exit BIOS Setup.
Proceed with the installation of the operating system.
