Chassis and processor fans use either a 3-wire or 4-wire connector. The 3-wire connectors are usually used by small chassis fans with lower power consumption. The 4-wire connectors are usually used by processor fans with higher power consumption.
Proper fan connector placement is shown in the figures below.
3-wire fan connecting to board's 4-pin fan header:
