Additional Supported Devices

In addition to the devices supported in version v1.0, LANDesk* Network Manager v1.1 supports these devices:

  • Intel® Express 10/100 Fast Ethernet Switch.
  • Intel® Express 100BASE-T4 Stackable Hub.
  • 100BASE-TX Media Adapter (for the Express 100BASE-T4 Stackable Hub).
  • 100BASE-TX Expansion Module (for the Express 100BASE-TX Stackable Hub).
Identifying an Express 100BASE-T4 Stackable Hub

When you double-click the Express 100BASE-T4 Stackable Hub icon in the network map, the Intel Device Viewer displays the hub image. The 100BASE-T4 Stackable Hub image includes a white T4 on the right side. The 100BASE-TX Stackable Hub image doesn't have an extra mark in this location.

Hardware configuration check

LANDesk Network Manager will display an alert box if you're using one of the following non-recommended stackable hub configurations:

  • More than six hubs in a stack.
  • A 100BASE-TX media adapter in a 100BASE-TX hub.
  • A Network Management Module in a hub other than the top hub of a stack.

Network Management Module image v1.1

The LANDesk Network Manager 1.1 installation CD-ROM includes version v1.1 of the Stackable Hub Network Management Module (NMM) image file (i111txhb.img).

This new image includes support for the Express 100BASE-T4 Stackable Hub and the 100BASE-TX Expansion Module.

New Features and Product Improvements for Intel Switching Hubs

LANDesk Network Manager v1.1 provides the following new features and improvements that give you greater control of Express Switching Hubs:

  • Trap Receiver table
  • Switch port-to-port statistics
  • Switch port utilization
  • Switch port naming
  • Improved spanning tree configuration
  • Improved Custom Filter Mask dialog box

Trap Receivers

A trap is a message the switch sends when an event occurs. Add a trap receiver when you want a management workstation (for example, the computer running LANDesk Network Manager) alerted of unusual events that occur on the switch.

To view the Trap Receivers table, choose Trap Receivers from the Switch menu on the Switch Device Viewer. The Trap Receivers dialog box contains up to five trap receivers for a switch.

From the Trap Receivers dialog box, you can add or delete entries.

Port to Port Statistics

The Port to Port Statistics table displays the number of packets and bytes sent among all ports on a switch. This information shows traffic between any two ports and can be used to establish usage baselines and to monitor traffic patterns.

To view the Port to Port Statistics dialog box, choose Port to Port Statistics from the Switch menu on the Switch Device Viewer.

The table is divided into four columns:
InPort The source port.
OutPort The destination port.
FwdPkts The number of packets forwarded from the source port to the destination port.
FwdBytes The number of bytes forwarded from the source port to the destination port.

Port Utilization

The Switch Port Utilization dialog box displays the utilization percentage for each collision domain segment on a switch. It also displays the backplane utilization for the entire switch.

The backplane is the switch's internal communication channel that passes information to ports. Backplane utilization is the amount of this channel's available bandwidth being used by traffic moving between switch ports.

Knowing port utilization can help you determine the point at which the amount of traffic on a port segment causes a decline in performance.

Name Ports

You can use the Name Ports dialog box to assign a name or number to a particular port on the switch. This identifier appears in the Switch Port Utilization dialog box and the network map. Naming a port also makes it easier to identify.

Spanning Tree Configuration

The Spanning Tree Configuration dialog box now features a Forward Delay Time setting. Forward Delay Time allows bridges to prevent temporary loops in the network by forcing them to pause and learn the new bridge configuration before forwarding frames on the network. Forward Delay Time range is 4-30 seconds.

Upgrading from Version v1.0

If you've already installed LANDesk Network Manager v1.0 and want to upgrade to version v1.1, follow the normal installation instructions in the LANDesk Network Manager User Guide using the version 1.1 CD-ROM or files from the WWW (LDNM.EXE). When you install LANDesk Network Manager v1.1, your current files will be updated or replaced appropriately. Your network maps won't be affected.
