LANDesk* Network Manager
Late-Breaking News

Where do I start?
If you've purchased Intel® hubs with Network Management Modules (NMMs), or Intel switches, set them up so you can use LANDesk* Network Manager to easily manage them from your workstation.

  1. Use the switch guide to configure and assign IP addresses to the switches. IP addresses make a switch reachable over the network.

Note: All managed devices must be on the same IP subnet, unless you use a router.

  2. Use the hub guide to install the hubs and the NMM guide to install the NMMs (one NMM per stack) and turn them on. The NMM user guide explains how to do the activities in this step:

    • Assign IP addresses to make the hubs reachable over the network.
    • Set the NMM to boot locally.

  3. Make sure your workstation has a TCP/IP stack installed and functioning properly, and an IP address assigned to it.

  4. Install LANDesk Network Manager.

  5. From Network Manager, run AutoDiscovery (see Quick Start in the Network Manager user guide).

If you're familiar with remote booting, you can boot the NMM using BOOTP and TFTP server software included with Network Manager. See Network Manager online help for details on BOOTP and TFTP.

TCP/IP stack: Important notice!

You must have a WinSock-compliant TCP/IP stack correctly installed and running on your workstation before you install Network Manager. Without it, Network Manager can't manage your network. See your TCP/IP product documentation for more information on installing a TCP/IP stack.

Known problems with some stacks

TCP/IP stacks shipped with Windows* 95 and Windows NT* aren't capable of autodiscovering IP nodes unless the nodes are running an SNMP agent.

Managing through HP OpenView*

LANDesk Network Manager supports HP OpenView 7.2 for Windows. To use Network Manager with OpenView, install Network Manager and configure each node you want to manage through OpenView.

  1. Install Network Manager on a workstation that has OpenView installed. The LANDesk Network Manager menu is added to the OpenView menu bar. (The menu items are not available until you select a device managed by Network Manager.)

  2. In OpenView, choose Add from the Edit menu.

  3. Choose Component, then Generic SNMP.

  4. Add the device to the map and assign the device's IP address as its name. If you assign any other name, Network Manager won't recognize the device.

Using SNMP with Novell NetWare*

To enable SNMP on your NetWare file server, add it to the AUTOEXEC.NCF. For example:

LOAD TCPIP FORWARD=YES
LOAD SNMPLOG
LOAD E100B SLOT=3 FRAME=ETHERNET_II NAME=LANA
BIND IP TO LANA ADDR=124.124.133.111
LOAD TCPCON

Check your NetWare documentation for more information and optional settings.

Using Windows NT 4.0

If you're using Windows NT 4.0, you must rename two of LANDesk Network Manager's files:

  • From the LDNM\APIEXEC\ directory, rename Auto.exe so it uses only lowercase letters (auto.exe).

  • From the LDNM\bitmaps\ directory, rename Auto.ico so it uses only lowercase letters (auto.ico).

This applies to:
