The history, current, and error log files keep messages about the status and activity of the network. Use these to review information such as errors, when a device is reset, and to see traps. You can save and print log files.
Viewing a previously saved log file
- From the File menu, choose Open Log. The Open Log File dialog box is displayed with the active log file shown in the File Name text box.
- To view the current event log, click OK. To view another event log, select the file, then click OK. The event log is displayed.
Each log file entry contains the date and time of the event, node name (if applicable), event type, priority, and the message. Log message colors correspond to the severity of the message. The color of the highest-priority message is shown on the toolbar log file button.

Message types
Several types of messages relating to Network Manager activity are sent to the event log file. For example, when Network Manager detects an error, a message is written to a log file, your PC beeps, and the Log button on the toolbar turns red. The table shows the message types.

Message priority
Each entry is colored according to the event priority. The Log button is the color of the highest priority entry in the current log file.
Each log entry is assigned a number from 1 to 6, where 1 is the highest priority and 6 is the lowest. Each priority is assigned a color.

If your network map contains nodes that can't be reached, Network Manager generates an error event when trying to communicate with those nodes. These and other messages are shown in the event log window.
Viewing log messages for a specific node
With Network Manager, you can see log messages for one specific node. This lets you more carefully manage a node's activity, and find status and problem messages.
- Select the node.
- From the Log menu, choose View Node Log.
The current log file entries for the selected node are displayed.
Viewing a history file
The history log file contains old log file messages for the Network Manager. When you close Network Manager, the log file entries from the current log are stored in the history file.
To view the history file, choose View History (for all messages) or View Node History (for the selected node's messages) from the Log menu.
Viewing a subset of the log file
You can filter the log file contents to display a subset of the file.
This is useful for eliminating clutter and low priority messages.
- Open a log file.
- From the Log menu, choose View Filter.
Searching the log file
You can search through a log file to find entries specific to a node or priority level.
Searching for an entry
Use the Search filter command to search for an entry in the open log file.
- From the Log menu, choose Search Filter.
- Enter a node and/or priority, and the type to search for.
- Click OK.
The log file displays the entries that match your specification.
Repeating a search
To repeat a filtered search, choose Search Next from the Log menu. The search is repeated, using the same criteria last entered in the Search Filter dialog box.
Clearing the log file
To clear the log and start with an empty file, choose Clear Log from the Log menu. This removes all log file entries. You might want to save a log file before clearing it.
