The Intel® Express stackable hub and some other network devices can be booted remotely using the BOOTP application. If a device is configured for network startup, it sends a BOOTP request over the network. If BOOTP is running and has the device's MAC address listed in its database file, BOOTP gives the device an IP address and the name of a configuration file that can be optionally transferred to the device from the TFTP server program.
To set up BOOTP to configure a device
- Configure the network device to boot from the network.
See the device's documentation for instructions. You can set the Express stackable hub NMM (network management module) to boot from the network by double-clicking the Express hub icon and choosing Boot Setup from the NMM menu.
- In Program Manager, open the BOOTP icon from the LANDesk* Network Manager group.
- From the File menu, choose Set Database File and specify the BOOTP database configuration file.
By default, the file is BOOTP.CFG, which contains sample information that you can edit to use for an Express stackable hub with an NMM.
- From the File menu, choose Edit Database File.
- In the first section, specify the path and file name of the network device's configuration file.
- In the database section, specify the host name (make one up as a placeholder if the device has none), hardware type (1 for Ethernet), MAC address, and IP address.
The Intel® Express NMM MAC address is 00.00.81. followed by the 6 characters in a sticker on the front of the NMM (for example, 00.00.81.4C.22.A7).
- Minimize the BOOTP application. When the NMM or other properly configured device restarts, it sends a request for a BOOTP server that specifies that device's MAC address.
