Discovered Nodes
The Discovered Nodes list box shows the network address, node type, and description of discovered devices. This information is saved in a log file and is saved until you clear the log.

Number of Nodes Discovered
Shows the total number of nodes that have been found so far during AutoDiscovery.

Number of Nodes Displayed
Shows the number of entries currently displayed in the list box. You can limit the entries displayed and added to the map by clicking the Filter button.

Number of Addresses Left to Check
Number of Nodes to Check is the number of IP addresses, found from connected nodes, that haven't been contacted yet. This number decreases as each address is checked, but can increase as AutoDiscovery reaches devices that provide new addresses to check.

Setup button
Use the Setup button to specify starting IP addresses and community names.

Start or Stop button
Starts AutoDiscovery now. If the AutoDiscovery process is currently running, this button says Stop. If you click Setup and set a Restart time, you'll rarely need to use the Start button.

Clear button
Use the Clear button to delete the list of discovered nodes.

Filter button
Use the Filter button to change the displayed devices. Filtering lets you specify which discovered nodes to display and add to the map.

Add to Map button
Adds all displayed devices to the Network Manager map. AutoDiscovery adds one hierarchy for each IP subnet, with all routers at the top map level and other devices inside a subnet hierarchy. Only the displayed devices are added.

OK button
Minimizes AutoDiscovery. To exit from AutoDiscovery, press Alt-Space to display the system menu, then choose Terminate.

AutoDiscovery Setup Dialog Box

Starting IP Addresses
A list of SNMP devices that you can use to discover other devices. Any active SNMP device can be used, but something that contacts many devices is best. Use your default router or a heavily-used switch or hub. Enter an IP address in the text box and click the Add button to add the address. You must enter at least one starting address.

Limit To Starting IP Class Networks
Discovers only devices in the same subnet as the starting addresses. With this option off, Network Manager tries to discover devices on all connected networks. If the starting IP address you provide doesn't discover any devices, turn this option off and try again.

Discover IPX Nodes
In addition to IP devices, discovers nodes running IPX (generally NetWare* devices). With this option off, Network Manager discovers only nodes running IP. An IPX node with no SNMP agent can be polled but not managed.

Max IPX Hops
The maximum number of IPX "hops" (jumps to another network through a router or similar device) to allow when discovering IPX devices. This option takes effect only when the Discover IPX Nodes option is selected.

Communities
A list of SNMP read community strings used during AutoDiscovery (normally, just "public"). If you've changed the read community string of any device in your network to something other than "public", add the string here. Type a string and click Add.

Restart
The number of minutes to wait before restarting AutoDiscovery automatically. Restarting AutoDiscovery automatically ensures that new devices and devices that may have been turned off will be found. Specify 0 minutes to turn off automatic rediscovery.

AutoDiscovery Filters Dialog Box

Show Nodes On Map
Displays any nodes that are already laid out. Normally these nodes are not displayed.

Include List Box
Shows a set of filters to match entries that are displayed in the Discovered Nodes list box.

Include button
Adds a filter to the Include list or modifies the selected entry. The Edit Filter dialog box lets you create a filter, including:

  • A pattern for the IP address. Use an asterisk (*) to match any numbers

    (for example, 135.137.*).

  • A pattern in the Description box that matches one or more descriptions in the Discovered Nodes list (for example, Intel *)

  • A device type from the Type list to match only specific device types known to Network Manager.

Exclude List Box
Shows a set of filters to match entries that will not be displayed in the Discovered Nodes list box.

Exclude button
Adds a filter to the Exclude list or modifies the selected entry. The Exclude button displays the same options as the Include button.

Delete button
Deletes the selected entry.
