Use the menus in the Alarms menu group to configure and display alarms for networks. An alarm monitors a particular variable and generates an SNMP Trap when a limit is exceeded. To configure alarms, display the RmonAlarm table from the RMON menu by choosing Alarms and then Display RmonAlarm Table.
RMON alarms are stored in the Network Manager log as Trap event types. Use the View Log menu item to view alarms. From the Config menu, choose Notifications to perform special actions, such as calling a pager, when an alarm occurs.
RMON Alarms are different from the generic SNMP threshold mechanism available with Network Manager histories. Although the function is the same, RMON alarms and histories are performed by the RMON probe and are based on network monitored statistics. Network Manager alarms and histories are performed by Trend Watch and are based on SNMP variables polled from SNMP Agents.
Displaying the RmonAlarm table
From the RMON menu, choose Alarms and then Display RMON Alarm Table.
| This column |
Contains this information |
| Index |
A unique number that identifies an alarm profile |
| Interval |
The sampling interval, in seconds |
| Variable |
The RMON variable being sampled |
| SampleType |
The type of sampling: Absolute or Delta |
| Value |
The current variable value |
| RisingThreshold |
The value set for the rising threshold |
| FallingThreshold |
The value set for the falling threshold |
| Owner |
The creator of the profile (normally SNMP Manager RMON) |
| Status |
The profile creation status (normally valid)
Viewing RMON traps in the Network Manager log file
- Select an RMON alarm entry if you want to view only the RMON traps for a specific entry. To view RMON traps for all entries, begin at step 2.
- Click View. Data on the RMON alarm traps for the probe is displayed.
The RMON Alarm trap contains these variables:
| This variable |
Contains this information |
| Trapname |
The rising or falling alarm |
| ent |
The Trap Object ID (always rmon) |
| comm |
The Trap community name (usually public) |
| Index |
The RmonAlarm Index number |
| Variable |
The polled alarm variable |
| SampleType |
Absolute or Delta |
| Value |
The current value of the polled variable |
| Threshold |
The rising or falling threshold
Deleting an RMON alarm entry
- Select the entry you want to remove from the table.
- Click Del. The entry is deleted.
Changing or adding an RMON alarm entry
- Select an entry in the RMON Alarms table.
- Click Edit to modify the entry or New to create a new entry.
- From the Alarm Variable pull-down list, choose a network statistic. A variety of variables count frames, bytes, and errors. The Network Manager Alarm package is set up to select only network statistics.
- From the Network list, choose a network to monitor.
- Enter the sampling period in the Poll Every box. The format of this box is hours:minutes:seconds (for example, 02:25:36).
- You can set rising and falling thresholds which are triggered when a value is to high or too low. To select a threshold, check the appropriate box and enter a value.
- Select Absolute to compare the threshold values with the actual value of the polled variable, or select Change to compare the threshold values to the amount the polled variable changed during the sampling period.
- Click Set.
Viewing alarm traps for a selected node or entry
- Select the node.
- From the Log menu, choose View Current Log.
