Installation
You must install HP OpenView for Windows before installing Network Manager. The Network Manager installation detects HP OpenView and asks if you want to add Network Manager as an OpenView sub-application. After you answer yes, the appropriate configuration changes are made to HP OpenView.

Setup adds the following line to the OpenViewApps section of the ovwin.ini file:

SNMPc=C:\LDNM\OVGHOST.EXE
To disable running Network Manager as an OpenView sub-application, comment out this line by placing a semicolon at the beginning of the line.

Running as an OpenView Application
When you run OpenView, it will automatically start Network Manager in OpenView mode. In this mode the main Network Manager windows will be hidden. You can still run Network Manager normally if OpenView is not running.

Since much of LANDesk Network Manager functionality overlaps OpenView, many features will not be accessible or enabled. Specifically, LANDesk Network Manager does not maintain a map or log file in OpenView mode. When LANDesk Network Manager runs in OpenView mode it uses minimal resources and will not place an undue burden on the host PC.

Do not run LANDesk Network Manager and OpenView at the same time. Bothapplications will compete for common SNMP resources and certain functions will not work properly in either application.

Adding Network Manager Nodes To The OpenView Map
Network Manager can manage and monitor only the HP* OpenView "Generic SNMP" device type. All other device types are managed by HP OpenView or third party applications. To add a Generic SNMP device icon to the OpenView map, choose Add command from the OpenView Edit menu. Select the Component class and SNMP device type from the Add toolbox.

Next, click the mouse on the OpenView map. The Network Manager Describe dialog box prompts for information about the node that will be used by Network Manager. You must enter a textual node name, IP address, Get (Read) and Set (Read/Write) community names, and optionally a hexadecimal MAC address. The Get and Set community names are usually set to public and private, respectively. Note that the MAC address format does not contain spaces, which is different from LANDesk Network Manager. You can select an icon from those displayed, or use the Auto Icon type.

Supported SNMP MIBs
Network Manager does not use the OpenView MIB database. Only the Network Manager compiled MIB database is accessible. If you want to use specific vendor MIBs with Network Manager commands from OpenView, you may need tocompile these MIBs with Network Manager. To do this you must run Network Manager without OpenView running, and choose Compile MIB from the Config menu. Refer to the user's guide, for a description of the Compile MIB command.

Network Manager Menus Added To HP* OpenView
LANDesk Network Manager adds four menu commands to the HP OpenView menu bar, under the LDNM menu:

  • the Display MIB Table command
  • the Edit MIB Variables command
  • the Node History command.
  • the Custom Menu command

This applies to:
LANDesk* Network Manager
