Error: Your computer stopped paying attention. Please exit and restart the software

This error may occur when you start the Intel® Play™ QX3™ Computer Microscope software. It is caused when Windows* 98 does not have the Cinepak* video codec installed. (The Cinepak codec is a piece of Windows* software needed to play the short Intel® Play™ logo animation that runs briefly when the QX3 software starts.)

You can solve the problem by installing (or reinstalling) the Windows* Video codecs:

  1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Settings » Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
  4. Scroll down the list of components to the Multimedia category, ensure the Multimedia component is checked and highlighted, and then under the Description section click Details.
  5. Scroll through the list of multimedia components and ensure the Video Compression component is checked, and then click OK.
  6. Click OK again to start the Windows Setup, and then follow the prompts when asked for the Windows CD.
If this does not solve the problem, uninstall the Video compression by repeating the steps above with the following change:
  • Instead of checking the Video Compression box in step 5, uncheck it. Continue with Step 6 to uninstall the Video Compression.
  • Repeat steps 1-6 again to reinstall the Video Compression.
If this error occurs while in the Live View window of the microscope software, after the Intel® Play logo animation runs, then Windows* does not have the Indeo* video codec installed or installed properly. The Indeo codec is needed to capture and playback movies created by the QX3 software.

To install (or reinstall) the Indeo codec, download and install QCODINSTL.EXE.
