I can't install the microscope software onto Microsoft Windows* 2000 or XP. The installation program thinks I have "Windows 3.1".
This installation problem occurs when you are trying to install the original version of the microscope's software onto Microsoft Windows* 2000 or XP. The original version of the software does not support Windows* 2000 or XP.
Updated installation software for Windows* 2000 and XP is available. To learn more about this update and how to download a copy,
visit the Microsoft* Windows* 2000 and XP Software Update web page. Please note that the Software Update is in English only and is not supported on non-English operating systems.
"There is not enough space to install these options. Please free up some disk space or modify your selections."
This error occurs on some systems even when there is plenty of hard drive space to install. In this case, the error is caused by a problem with the way Windows* responds to one of the functions used by Setup to determine free disk space. If you are sure that you have plenty of hard disk space, you can work around the problem by decreasing the amount of free space that is detected by Setup (by temporarily copying large files to the hard drive), then running Setup again.
- Using Windows* Explorer, create a temporary folder on the hard drive where you want to install the QX3™ software. (For example: C:\qx3temp)
- Copy several large files from the QX3 software CD-ROM into this temporary folder. The total size of these files should be about 200M. (You may need slightly more or slightly fewer bytes to get past the error.)
- Run the QX3TM microscope's Setup program.
- Once the Setup program is finished running, delete the temporary folder and all it's contents.
"_ins5576 caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll at xxxx:xxxxxxx."
This error occurs when Setup tries to check the USB configuration in some systems with older, nonstandard USB hardware configurations. A workaround is available that uses a patched file to disable Setup's USB checks. This workaround may make it possible to use the QX3 software in systems that receive this error, providing the USB ports and drivers are otherwise working properly.
Before trying the workaround make sure your system meets the following minimum requirements, which are required for the QX3 software to operate properly:
- Windows* 98
- 32M RAM
- 200MHz processor or faster
- Working USB port
Note: 300M is required to execute the workaround. If your system does not have 300M of free hard disk space, try creating more space by cleaning up the hard disk. Run the Windows* Disk Cleanup utility for help. (Go to Start/Programs/ Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.)
Workaround instructions:
- Download the patched version and instructions for the HWDIAG.DLL file.
- After downloading the patch, create a temporary folder in the root directory of the hard drive that has 300M free space. (For example, c:\qx3temp.)
- Put the QX3 Microscope CD in the CD-ROM drive. If Setup starts automatically, click Cancel, and then Exit Setup.
- Start Windows Explorer (Start » Programs » Windows Explorer) and highlight the drive labeled QX3Micro.
- Right-click on the drive icon, then select Open from the drop-down menu. This opens a separate window listing the contents of the QX3Micro drive.
- In the QX3Micro window, open the Edit Menu and choose Select All to select the entire contents of the CD (including directories), and then select Copy.
- Return to the Exploring window and highlight the directory you created in step 2.
- Paste the files you copied from the QX3Micro CD into the temporary directory. This creates a complete copy of the QX3 software CD on your hard drive.
- Copy the downloaded copy of the HWDiag.dll into the Install folder in your temporary folder (for example, c:\qx3temp\install). When it asks if you want to overwrite the old DLL, click OK. (If are not prompted to overwrite the file, make sure that you are copying into the "install" directory and not into the "qx3temp" directory.)
- Run the QX3 Microscope installation program from the hard drive by double-clicking the SETUP.EXE file in the c:\qx3temp\Install folder.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the install process.
- After the system reboots, copy the downloaded HWDiag.dll again. This time copy it into the c:\Windows\System folder. When it asks to overwrite the old DLL, click OK.
- You should now be able to run the QX3 application, provided your system has a working USB port that is enabled in the BIOS and has the proper Windows drivers installed.
- After verifying that the application runs properly, you can delete the qx3temp directory from your hard drive.
- Save these instructions and the HWDiag.dll file for future use, should you ever need to reinstall the application.
