With the Internet Station's modem sharing feature you can use modems for faxing and data transmission to online services, just as if the modem were connected to your PC.
Modem sharing notes
- You must install the Modem Finder software to access Internet Station modems from your PC. You can install Modem Finder only on Windows* 95.
- Check the Modem Compatibility list before installing any modems in the Internet Station. The modem must be Windows* 95 and Hayes compatible.
- You cannot share the modem that is selected for Internet access. Any other modems installed in the Internet Station are available for modem sharing.
- The Internet Station supports only faxing and terminal programs designed for Windows 95. You cannot use DOS or Windows 3.1 software.
Setting up a PC to share modems
You must install the Modem Finder software on each Windows* 95 system that uses Internet Station modems to fax or connect to bulletin board services.
To install Modem Finder
- Insert the CD-ROM into a drive in your PC. If Setup doesn't start automatically, run SETUP.EXE from the CD.
- When you select components to install, select Install Modem Finder Software.
- Setup configures your PC to use the modems on the Internet Station and installs the Modem Finder program, which you can use to find the COM port that each Internet Station modem is mapped to.
- Click the Modem Finder icon on the task bar.
- Note the COM port of the modem you want to use in the Modem Finder information window.
Now you can use the modem just like a modem installed in your PC, specifying the COM port you noted above in Modem Finder.
To install modem drivers
- Open My Computer and open the Control Panel.
- Open the Modem icon.
- Under Hardware types, select Modem and click Next.
- Click "Don't detect my modem..." and click Next.
- Locate your modem in the list and select it. If it is not listed, select Standard Modem Types.
- In the list on the right, select Standard 9600 bps modem. This works for most modems, despite the listed speed.
- Click Next, and select an Internet Station port (COM 3, 4, 5, or 6). If you don't know which COM port to select, click the Modem Finder icon on the Windows* task bar.
- After selecting a COM port in the Install New Modem window, click Next and Finish.
Using shared modems
Any Windows* 95 system on the network can use a shared modem, but only one system at a time can use a modem.
Sending a fax
If you install a fax modem in the Internet Station, you can send a fax from Windows 95.
To install fax software
- Open My Computer and open the Control Panel.
- Open Add/Remove Programs.
- Click the Windows Setup tab.
- Select the Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Fax components.
To send a fax
- Use the Print command in your word processor or other application.
- In printer options, select Microsoft* Fax. See your modem manual to see if you need to send any special instructions to the modem.
Connecting to Bulletin Boards
Use the HyperTerminal program to connect to bulletin boards.
To start HyperTerminal
- From the Start menu, select Programs.
- Select Accessories and HyperTerminal.
- Click HyperTerminal.
Connecting to the Internet
Once you have installed the Modem Finder software and installed modem drivers, you can set up your browser to access the Internet through a shared modem, just as you would with a modem connected to your PC. This lets you access a different ISP account on a separate phone line while other users browse through the shared Internet account.
Notes
- The shared modem must be different from the modem used for shared Internet access.
- The shared modem should be connected to a separate phone line, and you should use a different ISP account.
- Set up your browser for a dialup networking connection. (In Internet Explorer*, click Options on the View menu, and click the Connect tab.) Run Modem Finder to see what communications port to use for the modem.
