This document outlines the procedure to format the hard drive of the Intel® InBusiness™ Email Station.
Formatting of the Intel® InBusiness™ eMail Station hard drive may be needed after an unsuccessful upgrade or if firmware corruption is suspected.
Warning: All settings, email in transit and user configurations will be irrevocably removed from the eMail Station. This procedure should only be used if all other options have been exhausted or firmware installation fails. Make sure you have a hard copy of all your settings for resetting up the Intel® InBusiness™ eMail Station.
- Download the latest firmware from the Intel® InBusiness™ Email Station downloads Web site.
- Isolate the eMail Station and the PC (that will run the upgrade) from the rest of the network. (required)
- Set the eMail Station to factory defaults: Power the unit off, press and hold the recessed reset button on the back of the unit, power it on and hold for 30 seconds. Release the button. The unit will now be at its factory default IP of 192.168.42.253. Cycle power on the eMail Station.
- Configure a workstation to an IP address of 192.168.42.200 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
- Ping the eMail Station to ensure a connection has been established. Open a DOS window and type ping 192.168.42.253
- Telnet to port 244 of the eMail Station.
If you are using a Microsoft Windows* telnet client, go to Start / Run then type telnet 192.168.42.253 244 <Enter>. This will bring up the telnet window with a black cursor in the upper left-hand windows. Press <shift>+z to get a login prompt.
- If the eMail Station prompts you for a login at this point, use the administrative user name and password to login. You should now receive a message that suggests you close this connection if you arrived here by accident.
- Erase all contents of the eMail Station.
Type: purge confirm <Enter> This will take about 15 minutes. If the eMail Station is rebooted or power cycled the power, serial, and check alert lights will blink until the new firmware is installed.
- Power cycle the eMail Station at this time. This will take approximately 5 to 10 seconds.
- Telnet to the eMail Station (See step 6)
- Create a new partition:
Type mkfs 0 0 /ide/ <Enter> You should now get data starting with BLK_DEV indicating various partition and HDD parameters being set. If you receive an error at this point, power cycle the Email Station, telnet into the unit again per the instructions above and repeat the mkfs command in this step. If you still receive an error, contact technical support.
- Power cycle the eMail Station.
- Install the latest firmware. Note that the lights on the eMail Station will continue to flash until the firmware update has been completed. It is also strongly recommended you do NOT restore a previous backup of the eMail Station after formatting.
- Reset the IP address of the eMail Station and your workstation to their original settings.
