Game troubleshooting

Graphics compatibility issues with games are typically categorized as follows:

Performance issues

Review the following web pages to troubleshoot a performance issue:

Graphics corruption or incorrect display

Common examples of these issues include missing textures, scrambled video, flashing areas, or a solid colored screen. Graphic corruptions usually occur when a game is using a graphics feature not supported by the graphics controller, the graphics driver has an issue, or there is an issue with the game.

You can choose one or more of the following options to resolve the issue.

  • Review the Game Compatibility List to see if this is a known issue with this particular game. If so, specific information or instructions are listed to resolve the issue. Tested games with no issues found are also listed there.
  • Update the graphics drivers to the latest version. If drivers are not available from the system or motherboard manufacturer, the latest Intel graphics drivers can be used.
  • Check the web site of the game manufacturer for any game updates, patches, or known issues with the graphics adapter.
  • Use the in-game options screen to turn off any features not supported by the graphics controller.
  • Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX* installed on your system. Most games include the version of DirectX required on the game CD, but an updated version can sometimes help to resolve an issue.

Game troubleshooting

Common examples of troubleshooting issues are when there is a graphics or video error message indicating that a computer is stopping when starting the game or loading a game level, or a screen is blank when starting the game.

Use one or more of the following options to resolve the issue.

  • Review the Game Compatibility List to see if this is a known issue with this particular game. If so, specific information or instructions are given to resolve the issue. Tested games with no issues found are also listed there.
  • Update the graphics drivers to the latest version. If drivers are not available from the system or motherboard manufacturer, the latest Intel graphics drivers can be used.
  • Check the web site of the game manufacturer for any game updates, patches, or known issues with the graphics controller.
  • Check that background tasks are not running, like virus scanners, task schedulers, remote system control programs, or any other programs that run in the Windows* task bar.
  • Check the CPU Usage using Windows* Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc). Watch the CPU Usage in the status bar of this window for several seconds. If usage remains higher than about 15 percent, check the processes tab to see which programs are using excessive system resources.
  • Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX* installed on your system. Most games include the version of DirectX that they require on the game CD, but sometimes an updated version helps to resolve an issue.
  • Reduce the desktop screen resolution and color depth to 640x480 and High Color (16-bit) color depth in Display Properties. Many games try to switch to this particular screen resolution and color depth when loading. Switching to this mode manually helps you decided if the issue is with switching video modes or with loading the game. Also, some OpenGL* games try to run at the current desktop color depth. Sometimes graphics adapters do not support 3D acceleration at higher than 16-bit color depth, so they can not use OpenGL 3D acceleration at true color (24-bit or 32-bit color depth).
