Thin horizontal lines across the desktop

Symptom(s):

Two or three faint horizontal lines appear across the desktop.  They are most noticeable on a light colored background.

Cause:

This is due to the design of the CRT monitor.  Some monitors use a technology called "Aperture Grille."  This monitor design use horizontal tensioning wires that cause a faint shadow on the monitor image.  This technology is often branded as Sony* Trinitron*, Mitsubishi* Diamondscan*, or ViewSonic* SonicTron*.

The more common "INVAR Shadow Mask" and LCD monitor technologies do not have these tensioning wires.

Solution:
Adjusting the contrast of the monitor may minimize the appearance of the lines.  This issue is not a problem with the graphics controller.
