The Tablet PC is an emerging mobile form factor existing in specialized market segments. The input device is a special digital pen (or stylus) that is used to draw or write directly on the screen. This new stylus contains an electromagnetic coil embedded in its tip to create "digital-ink." A Tablet PC takes advantage of the handwriting recognition and dictation features of the operating system. Detailed information about Windows* XP Tablet PC Edition can be obtained from Microsoft*.
Tablet PCs comes in two different form factors:
- Slate Form Factor
- Convertible Form Factor
Slate Form Factor The slate form factor has neither an integrated keyboard nor a cover for the display. The desktop is viewed in portrait mode and a digital pen is used to write directly on the screen. Many OEMs offer slate style Tablet PCs that feature the Intel® 830MG chipset. For detailed product specifications and support, please consult the OEM web pages for further information.
Convertible Form Factor A convertible Tablet PC is a typical laptop with an integrated keyboard and an integrated lid with LCD display. The difference is that it can be converted to a slate style (tablet) device by turning the screen 180 degrees and then folding it back onto the keyboard. The laptop configuration gives you a keyboard and display, whereas the slate configuration allows you to write directly on the screen with digital-ink.
Features of the Intel 830MG chipset-based Tablet PC include:
- Screen rotation - landscape (traditional) and portrait (tablet)
- Hot docking
- Long battery life
- Fast resume from standby
- Built-in wireless connectivity
These devices are powered by the Mobile Intel® Pentium® III processor-M, delivering the power needed to create and store "original ink" files. Consuming only 0.5 watts, the original ink files can either be stored on a hard drive or converted to text.
