Symptom(s):
EA* Sports FIFA* 2002, Need for Speed*, Driver, NHL* 2002 games show flashing bars
Solution:
These games require a feature that is not supported by the A5 stepping graphics hardware. A6 (or later) steppings of the Intel® 82830M Graphics Memory Controller Hub (GMCH) do support this feature and do not exhibit this issue. This is documented as errata 13 in the Intel® 830 Chipset: 82830 GMCH Specification Update.
The flashing can be reduced somewhat by switching the game to 800x600 or 1024x768 using a setup utility for the game. For FIFA* 2002, this can be found here:
Start > Programs > EA Sports > FIFA 2002 > FIFA 2002 3D Setup.
