What Do I Do if a Security Freeze Lock is Detected on the Drive?

If a Security Freeze Lock (UEFI/BIOS recognized the SSD as being plugged in at boot up) is detected on the drive, the drive must be power cycled before you can do a Secure Erase.

To remove the Security Freeze Lock state and continue with the Secure Erase process:

  • Power-cycle the Intel® Solid-State Drive (Intel® SSD). Remove the SATA power cable from the drive and quickly reconnect it while the Intel® Solid-State Drive Toolbox is running. Depending on your system configuration, removal of the Intel® SSD from the system can be required.
Note Do this process quickly, to make sure the system continues to recognize the Intel SSD.
  • After unplugging and plugging in the SSD, click OK.

The Intel® Solid-State Drive Toolbox rescans the system for the Intel SSD. Once the drive is detected, you can continue with the Secure Erase. If the Security warning message displays again, repeat the power-cycling process, making sure to quickly remove and reconnect the SATA power cable.

If the Intel SSD is not detected:

  • Click OK on the Selected Drive Not Found message. The Intel Solid-State Drive Toolbox home screen displays, and scans the system for drives.

  • Once the Intel SSD is detected, select the Intel SSD on the home screen and click Secure Erase.

If the Intel SSD does not display on the Intel Solid-State Drive Toolbox home screen:

  1. Click Start, right-click Computer > Manage.
  2. Click Device Manager. Right-click Disk drives. Click Scan for hardware changes.
  3. After scanning the system, click Refresh on the Intel Solid-State Drive Toolbox home screen, and try the Secure Erase procedure again.

If the Security Freeze Lock message continues to display, Intel recommends getting a drive utility with Secure Erase and running Secure Erase from that utility.

For more information on running Secure Erase, see the help files in the Intel® Solid-State Drive Toolbox.
