Modem Compatibility Statement For Intel Modems

Intel modems are compatible with virtually all 300, 1200, and 2400bps modems. Be aware that there are proprietary high speed standards that Intel does not support ("PEP" Protocol used with Telebits, HST Used by US Robotics Modems).

How To Identify A V.32/V.32Bis Modem

If the modem on the other end is a V.32 modem, call it with your telephone. * If you hear a broken tone when it answers, the modem is a V.32 modem. * If you hear a steady tone when it answers, the modem is not a V.32 modem OR V.32 mode on that modem is not enabled.

AT&T Paradyne* 2224: Semi-Compatible With 14.4EX

The Intel 14.4EX modem will not connect to these modems at 2400 baud. Before calling a Paradyne 2224 modem, issue the command ATS31=5 to you 14.4EX modem. This forces a 1200 baud connection. The reason the 14.4EX modem can't connect is that the Paradyne 2224 sends out a 2225Hz answer tone and the 14.4EX expects the V.22bis (2400 baud) standard 2250Hz tone. The Rockwell chips used in the 14.4EX modems won't recognize the Paradyne 2224's tone as a 2400 baud answering tone. All other Intel modems should connect at 2400 baud with no problems.

Harris* 9126 2400 Baud: Semi-Compatible With 14.4Ex

The Harris 9126 can connect with the Intel 14.4 modem only at 300 bps.

Hayes* Ultra: Semi Compatible With Intel High Speed Modems

Tested by Intel
All Intel modems will connect to the Hayes Ultra at 300, 1200, and 2400bps. Intel High Speed modems can connect to the Hayes Ultra at 4800 and 9600bps if you enable V.32 mode on the Ultra. The Hayes Ultra is a V.32 compatible modem that incorporates V.42bis and MNP levels 1-5. The Ultra also supports the Hayes Proprietary "ping-pong" 9600bps mode. When the Ultra has V.32 mode disabled, only other Hayes modems can talk to it at 4800 and 9600bps. Intel High Speed Modems: To connect to a Hayes Ultra with V.32 mode disabled, enter this initialization string into your communications software to properly configure your Intel high-speed modem.
