Faxability And Faxmodem Compatibility - Overview

This document first lists faxmodems tested & found compatible with FAXability (versions 1.0 and 2.0) where no issues were seen. Next is a lis of faxmodems with compatibility notes. This compatibility information comes from Intel tests.

FAXability is compatible with most Class 1, Class 2, and SendFAX modems. FAXability is also compatible with CAS-based faxmodems. To find out what type of modem you have, follow the instruction under "What Type of Faxmodem Do I Have".

What Type Of Faxmodem Do I Have?

When CASMODEM 1.06i (and higher) loads, it automatically determines your faxmodem type. If you use an earlier version of CASMODEM or just want to know what type of faxmodem you have, here's how to determine your faxmodem type:

  1. Run your data communications software (such as Windows Terminal) and select "terminal mode" so you can issue AT commands to your faxmodem.

  2. Type the command AT+FCLASS=? and press ENTER. Here are the possible responses from your faxmodem:

    0,1 This is a Class 1 faxmodem
    0,2 This is a Class 2 faxmodem
0,1,2 This is a Class 2 faxmodem (that also supports Class 1)
    OK Go to step 3

  3. If your faxmodem responded to the AT+FCLASS=? command with "OK" or "Error", type the command AT#F0 and press ENTER. Here are the possible responses from your faxmodem:

OK This is a Sendfax faxmodem

Error This is not a faxmodem (data modem only)

Hayes Optima/Fax144: Compatible With Faxability 2.0

Tested by Intel
Intel successfully sent and received faxes using the Hayes Optima/FAX144 faxmodem and FAXability 2.0. Intel could only get the Hayes Optima/FAX144 to fax at a speed of 9600bps (when using CASMODEM), even though this faxmodem is capable of faxing at 14.4bps. This is because CASMODEM doesn't properly recognize the Hayes Optima/FAX144's ability to fax at 14.4bps.

Practical Peripherals Pm14400Fxpkt: Compatible With Faxability 2.0

Tested by Intel
Intel successfully sent and received faxes using the PM14400FXPKT faxmodem and FAXability 2.0. Note: This faxmodem is not compatible with FAXability 2.0 for file transfers.

Smart Link 1414Prv: Semi-Compatible With Faxability 2.0/Win

When using the Smart Link 1414PRV faxmodem with FAXability 2.0 for Windows, you must set the the "Maximum Bit Rate" in FAXability 2.0 to "9600BPS". The faxmodem cannot send or receive reliably at with the "Maximum Bit Rate" in FAXability set for "Faxmodem's maximum".

This test was conducted using FAXability 2.0 for Windows with CASMODEM version 2.01i.

Spectra-Com P1414Mx: Semi-Compatible With Faxability 2.0/Win

The Spectra-Com P1414MX faxmodem can receive faxes at 14.4Kbps with FAXability 2.0 for Windows, but cannot send at 14.4Kbps. For more reliable results, set the "Maximum Bit Rate" in FAXability 2.0 to "9600BPS".

Us Robotics Worldport 14,400: Semi-Compatible With Faxability 2.0

Tested by Intel
Intel successfully sent and received faxes and file transfers with the US Robotics WorldPort 14,400 faxmodem and FAXability 2.0.

However, the "Maximum Bit Rate" for FAXability 2.0 must be set to "9600 BPS" when installed for the WorldPort 14,400. With the "Maximum Bit Rate" for FAXability set for "Faxmodem's maximum", the faxmodem would not connect reliably when sending and receiving.

Viva 96/48: Incompatible With Faxability 2.0

Tested by Intel
Intel could not send or receive faxes using the Viva 96/48 faxmodem and FAXability 2.0.

Zoom 94/48 Sr Tax 4.42: Incompatible With Faxability 2.0

Angia Pocket Modem Faxstar Datastar: Version 2.33 Compatible With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel successfully sent and received faxes using FAXability 1.0 (CASMODEM 1.10i) and the Angia Pocket Modem version 2.33. Intel could send but not receive faxes with the Angia Pocket Modem version 2.27.

Note:
When loading CASMODEM, you need to add the /C2 parameter to the command line, because CASMODEM's auto-detect feature doesn't work on these Class 2 faxmodems. To find the faxmodem version number, run your data communications program in terminal mode and enter the ATI3 command.

Ati Etc/Fax: Compatible With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel tested the ATI ETC/FAX faxmodem and found it to be compatible with FAXability Plus 1.0 and FAXability Plus/OCR.

Cardinal 24/96: Compatible With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel

Complete Communicator: Incompatible With Faxability 1.0

This faxmodem doesn't support Class 1, Class 2, or Sendfax, so it isn't compatible with FAXability.

DALLAS FAX 24/96: LIMITED COMPATIBILITY WITH FAXABILITY 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel successfully sent faxes using the Dallas Fax 24/96 faxmodem with FAXability Plus 1.0 and FAXability Plus/OCR. However, when receiving faxes the Dallas Fax 24/96 faxmodem sometimes locked up in an off-hook state after a few faxes were sent. Power down the modem, then power up again to fix this problem. Whenever you power down the modem you must exit Windows, unload CASMODEM, then reload CASMODEM (or just reboot your computer).

Another symptom of this lockup is that the modem answers the phone and negotiates a fax handshake, but sometimes the fax is not received. The usual error in the FAXability log is "Remote unit suddenly stopped sending."

Dove Fax 96/96: Compatible With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel tested this Class 1 faxmodem and found it to be compatible with FAXability Plus 1.0 and FAXability Plus/OCR.

Everex 24/96E: Incompatible With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel tested this faxmodem and found it to be incompatible with FAXability Plus 1.0 and FAXability Plus/OCR. Apparently this faxmodem is neither Class 1, Class 2, or CAS compatible.

Frecom Fax96: Compatible With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel successfully sent and received faxes using FAXability Plus/OCR version 1.0 with this Class 2 faxmodem. Intel selected "Other Class 2" while installing FAXability.

Gateway Telepath: Limited Compatibility With Faxability 1.0

You must configure FAXability 1.0 for "Other Class 1" when using the Gateway Telepath faxmodem. When the AT+FCLASS=? command is issued, the faxmodem returns "0,1,2" (0=Data modem, 1=Class 1, 2=Class2). Even though the Gateway Telepath faxmodem reports it has Class 2 capability, FAXability 1.0 doesn't work with it when configured for "Other Class 2".

Gvc Pocket Faxmodem: Compatible With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel tested this Class 2 faxmodem and found it to be compatible with FAXability Plus 1.0 and FAXability Plus/OCR.

Max Fax 9624: Limited Compatibility With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel tested the MAX FAX 9624 faxmodem and found that later versions are compatible with FAXability 1.0; earlier versions are not. Here's how to tell if your Max FAX 9624 is compatible:

  1. Run a communications program and access the "terminal" mode. (Terminal mode allows you to send AT commands to the modem).

  2. Type the command AT+FCLASS=? then press ENTER.

  3. If the the faxmodem responds with "0,2", it is compatible.
If your faxmodem doesn't return "0,2", contact Macronix (the manufacturer) for a firmware update.

MEGAHERTZ 96/24: COMPATIBLE WITH FAXABILITY 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel tested this faxmodem and found it to be compatible with FAXability Plus 1.0 and FAXability Plus/OCR. However, this modem supports fax send only, so you cannot receive faxes with it.

NETCOMM SMARTMODEM V32 M7F: INCOMPATIBLE WITH FAXABILITY 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel was unable to send faxes with this Class 2 faxmodem from FAXability Plus 1.0 (using CASMODEM 1.06i and 1.10i). Also, the faxmodem would not receive faxes sent in fine mode (200x200 dpi), but did receive faxes sent in standard mode (100x200 dpi).

Practical Peripherals Pm2400Fx96Sal: Compatible With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel tested this Class 2 faxmodem and found it to be compatible with FAXability Plus 1.0 and FAXability Plus/OCR. However, occasionally this faxmodem doesn't hang up after completing a fax. Intel found that the PM2400FX96SA faxmodem successfully hangs up after a fax about 85% of the time. The instructions for hanging up the phone are sent correctly, however sometimes the PM2400FX96SA doesn't respond.

Note:
If you close a DOS window while the faxmodem is using the phone line, |the faxmodem may disconnect. See "Faxmodem Loses Connection When Closing DOS Window" for more information.

Note:
Configure FAXability for OTHER CLASS 2 FAXMODEMS, because this faxmodem doesn't support Class 1 (ie. AT+FCLASS=? returns 0,2). See "What Type of Faxmodem Do I Have?" for more information.

Practical Peripherals Pm14400Fxsa: Compatible With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel tested this faxmodem and found it to be compatible with FAXability Plus 1.0 and Plus/OCR. However, occasionally this faxmodem doesn't hang up after completing a fax. Intel found that the PM14400FXSA faxmodem successfully hangs up after a fax about 85% of the time. The instructions for hanging up the phone are sent correctly, however sometimes the PM14400FXSA doesn't respond.

Practical Peripherals Technical Support tells us there are several ROM versions for this faxmodem:

  • ROM versions "previous to 1.1h" had "problems sending faxes in general".

  • ROM version 1.1h had "some problems receiving faxes".

  • ROM version 1.15 (the most current ROM version at the time of this writing), fixes problems with sending faxes to certain fax machines - a retrain problem.

Contact Practical Peripherals technical support for more information.

Also, there has been some confusion as to which faxmodem to select when installing FAXability with this faxmodem. This modem is not listed in the FAXability INSTALL program, but it is listed in the example of how to select a faxmodem in the manual. Select "Other Class1" faxmodem.

Rockwell 24/96: Unknown Compatibility

Intel has no compatibility reports on this faxmodem but believes it will be compatible. However, Intel cannot guarantee compatibility until this faxmodem has been tested with FAXability.

Smart One Fax: Limited Compatibility With Faxability 1.0

Tested by Intel
Intel tested this faxmodem with FAXability Plus 1.0 and FAXability Plus/OCR and found that the modem frequently locks up in an off-hook state after sending 1 to 2 faxes. If this happens, power down the modem, then power it up again. Whenever you power down the modem you must exit Windows, unload CASMODEM, then reload CASMODEM (or just reboot your computer).
