America Online* 1.0 For Windows: Compatible With Intel Modems &Amp; Satisfaxtion Faxmodems

Intel was able to connect to America Online with an Intel modem configured as a "Hayes compatible modem". Here's how to configure America Online for Intel modems.

  1. Start America Online for Windows.

  2. Choose the "Setup" button in the America Online "Welcome" screen.

  3. Choose "Setup modem" in the "Network & Modem Setup" screen.

  4. Confirm that the "Modem Port:" is the COM port of your modem.

  5. Choose "Hayes compatible modem" from the list.

  6. Choose the "Edit commands" button.

  7. Change the "Reset string" according to your modem type. 14.4EX, 9600EX, 2400 V.42bis, 2400 MNP: AT&F\N0^M
    2400B Classic, 2400EX: AT&F^M
    SatisFAXtion faxmodems: AT&F\N0^M

  8. Click on the OK button in each dialog box until you return to the opening screen.

You might also want to confirm the configuration of your modem's COM port in the Windows Control Panel (especially if your faxmodem uses COM3 or COM4).

America Online* V1.3: Suggested Configuration For Intel® Faxmodems

Note:
This information relates the "stand alone" version of AOL, but doesn't relate to the AOL that runs under Geoworks(tm).

America Online 1.3 has no built-in modem support in their setup program.

AOL further suggests "Any flow control, error correction, or data compression features of your modem be disabled". This is accomplished in the AOL provided "Setup" program by following these instructions.

For Intel Faxmodems & Intel Modems, select and run the SETUP program in the default directory of C:\AOL.

Note:
The method AOL uses to determine the existence of a COM port is not compatible with Intel internal modems if they are installed on a non-standard DOS IRQ.

Configuring the Program:

For Intel Modems, select and run the SETUP program in the default directory of C:\AOL.

Existing Installations

You must choose "Reconfigure Everything" and press Enter to continue. Answer each screen presented as appropriately as possible until you reach the "Communications Port" window.

New Installations and Existing

  1. Choose the COM port for your modem (COM1, COM2, COM3 or COM4) then press ENTER.

  2. Choose the Baud Rate for your modem (300, 1200, 2400) then press ENTER.

  3. SETUP will report it has found your modem on the specified port.

  4. Choose your printer from the PRINTER selection window then press ENTER.

  5. Choose any drivers you want to delete in the DRIVER Deletion Window then press ENTER.

  6. When AOL displays the "Congratulations" window, Press ENTER to continue.

  7. When AOL displays the "Welcome to America Online" screen, choose SETUP from the menu.

  8. At the "Modem and Network Setup" screen, make sure the entries are correct.

    Phone Type......>TONE PULSE
    Modem Port......>COM1 COM2 COM3 COM4

  9. Choose ADVANCED SETUP from the menu.

  10. Enter the appropriate "Pre-modem" string for your faxmodem:

    Faxmodem Pre-modem String
    2400EX, 9600EX, 14.4EX, Upgraded SatisFAXtion Classic, SatisFAXtion Modem/350,
    144/144, 96/96, 24v/96 AT&F\N0
    SatisFAXtion Modem/100,
    24/96i AT&F

  11. Modify the "Post-modem" string as appropriate for your faxmodem:

  12. 12.Choose OK then make any other changes as you find appropriate.

  13. 13.Choose SAVE. You should now see the "Welcome to America Online" screen. The AOL configuration is complete.

    America Online* 1.5: Compatible With Intel Faxmodems

    America Online 1.5 is compatible with Intel Modems & Faxmodems. America Online 1.5 has no built-in modem support in their setup program. However, the Intel Faxmodem default settings are compatible with AOL.

    For Intel Modems & Faxmodems, run the INSTALL program found on the AOL software distribution disk. When the software installation is completed, you will be presented with further options to configure your software to your hardware. Communications ports with modems are automatically found and you should accept the port to which your modem is connected.

    Intel Modems & Faxmodems require no special initialization strings.
