Resolving Windows* Fax Software Conflicts
Resolving Windows* fax software conflicts involves two steps:
Simplify the System Verify Program Operation
Resolving Conflicts: Simplify The System
- Make backup copies of the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files using these commands:
COPY CONFIG.SYS CONFIG.BAK COPY AUTOEXEC.BAT AUTOEXEC.BAK
- Using an ASCII editor, such as DOS 5.0's EDIT or Windows' Notepad, load the CONFIG.SYS file. Then disable all command lines (by adding the characters "REM " to the beginning of each line) except for these:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS FILES=30 BUFFERS=25
SatisFAXtion Classic, Upgraded SatisFAXtion Classic and SatisFAXtion Modem/350 users, don't "REM " this line: DEVICE=C:\FAX\SATISFAX.SYS...
Note: Don't disable your memory manager just because it isn't named HIMEM.SYS. Your memory manager needs to load so you can run Windows. Regardless of which memory manager you use, DON'T ADD "REM " to the beginning of its command line.
- Using an ASCII editor, load the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and add the characters "REM " to the beginning of each line except these.
Modem/100 users, don't "REM " these lines: PATH=C:\;... PROMPT $P $G C:\FAX\CASMODEM.EXE C:\FAX\CASMODEM.CFG
SatisFAXtion Classic, Upgraded SatisFAXtion Classic and SatisFAXtion Modem/350 users, don't "REM " these lines: PATH=C:\;... PROMPT $P $G C:\FAX\CASMGR.EXE C:\FAX\CASMGR.CFG
- Reboot the computer to put the changes into effect.
Resolving Conflicts: Verify Program Operation
If you're using a Windows* fax program, start Windows and try to send a fax as usual. If you're using a DOS application, load FAXPOP and try to send a fax.
If you still can't send a fax, you may have an I/O address or IRQ conflict between the faxmodem and another device. Resolve that conflict, then try to fax again from the simplified system.
If you can send a fax on your simplified system, one or more of the programs loading in the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file is conflicting with the fax software. Here's how to find out which program is conflicting:
- Using an ASCII editor, load the CONFIG.SYS file and delete the first "REM " statement in the file (this will enable the command on that line).
- Save the file.
- Reboot the computer.
- Try to send a fax.
- If the fax works, repeat steps 1 through 5 for one line at a time. This will allow you to easily tell which command causes a problem.
If you can no longer send a fax, you now know which command is causing the conflict. Read the documentation or call the manufacturer of that program to find a way to configure the program so it won't conflict with the fax software. If that isn't possible, you'll have to stop using the program when you want to send faxes.
- Once you delete all the "REM " statements in your CONFIG.SYS file, repeat steps 1 through 5 this time using AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
