I/O And IRQ Conflicts On Intel® Faxmodems
The most common reasons customers call Intel® Customer Support stem from I/O address or IRQ conflicts. Usually the conflict results from setting the faxmodem to the I/O address and IRQ used by an existing COM port. Finding A Com Port For An Intel® Faxmodem
Here's an easy method for finding an unoccupied COM port for the faxmodem. Perform these steps BEFORE inserting the faxmodem into the computer. If you've already inserted the faxmodem, remove it before performing these steps.
- Insert the Intel Utilities Diskette into drive A (or drive B).
- Type A:\COMSTAT (or B:\COMSTAT ) and press ENTER.
- Write down the information on your screen. If you have a printer connected to your computer, hold down the SHIFT key and press the key labeled "Prt Sc" or "Print Scrn". This will print out the text displayed on your screen.
Deciding Which Port To Use For The Modem
If COMSTAT reports that only COM1 is active, set the modem to COM2. If COMSTAT reports both COM1 and COM2 active, find out if there are devices using COM1 or COM2 (such as a mouse, printer, etc.). If possible, disable the unused COM port so you can set the modem to that port. See the user's guide for your computer to find out how to disable a COM port.
NOTE: On some systems, it is possible to disable a COM port and its IRQ separately. For the systems that have both options, you have to disable both the port AND the IRQ to free up the port completely. This problem has been observed with some Gateway 2000 desktop computers.
If you're using both COM1 and COM2 or can't disable your COM ports, you may be able to use COM3 or COM4 depending on the devices attached to COM1 and COM2. A mouse and a modem don't usually share an IRQ successfully. A printer and a modem sometimes can successfully share an IRQ.
Intel internal faxmodems offer two additional configurations. If your faxmodem has switches, see the faxmodem Installation Guide for the switch settings for these configurations (these settings are not printed on the board's metal bracket).
| COM3 |
3E8 |
IRQ 5 (works in 286/386/486/Pentium-based (AT) computers) |
| COM4 |
2E8 | IRQ 2
(works in 8088/8086-based (PC/XT) computers) |
If you configure your modem for COM3 IRQ5 and plan to use Windows* communications software, you must configure the COM3 port in the Windows* Control Panel. After opening the Control Panel, select "Ports". Next, select "COM3" then select the "Advanced" button. Change the "Interrupt request line" to 5.
NOTE: Before configuring your modem for COM3/IRQ 5 or COM4/IRQ 2, make sure your communications software supports these ports.
CAUTION: Never use IRQ 5 in 8088/8086-based computers because IRQ 5 is used by your hard drive. Never use IRQ 2 in 286/386/486-based computers because IRQ 2 is used to "cascade" the two interrupt controllers. Testing Your Intel Faxmodem With Testcom
Intel includes TESTCOM with every Intel Faxmodem. You'll find TESTCOM on your Intel Utilities diskette. To run TESTCOM:
- Insert the Intel Utilities diskette and change to that drive.
- Type TESTCOM then press ENTER.
- Press ENTER when you see the Intel banner.
- Select the COM port occupied by your faxmodem.
Testcom Diagnostic Test Failure (NVRAM TEST) On 144/144 Faxmodem
Some Intel Faxmodems were shipped with the wrong version of the TESTCOM program (version 4.3). The modems actually work, but TESTCOM reports a "Diagnostic test failure" during the NVRAM test. The other features of TESTCOM work correctly on the faxmodems.
To obtain the correct version of TESTCOM (version 4.5), access one of Intel's online services and download the file named TSTCOM.EXE. Save it in the directory of your choice. After you have downloaded the TSTCOM.EXE file:
- Exit your modem software.
- Change to the directory containing TSTCOM.EXE.
- Type TSTCOM and press ENTER.
TSTCOM.EXE is a self-extracting archive file. When executed, TSTCOM.EXE will decompress a copy of the TESTCOM.EXE file version 4.5. Procomm Plus For Windows*

Procomm Plus for Windows* on COM3 or COM4
Make sure Procomm Plus is configured for the modem's I/O address and IRQ. Microchannel system's COM3 and COM4 are different than those in a Classic Bus system. See the "Readme" file included in the Procomm distribution package for further information on configuration options.

Delrina Technology, Inc. 416-441-1026
Above information valid as of 4/1/94.
Intel based this recommended configuration upon information provided by Delrina Technology. Contact Delrina Technology if you have any questions or problems while installing or using WinFax Pro.
- Run the WinFax PRO setup program according to the directions in the WinFax PRO User's Guide.
- When WinFax PRO 3.0 SETUP asks you to "Select the fax/modem you have installed", select the class type for your Intel Faxmodem.
| Faxmodem |
Class Type |
| 144/144 |
Class 2 |
| 96/96 |
Class 2 |
| 24v/96 |
Class 2 |
| 24/96i |
Class 1 |
- If WinFax Pro 3.0 SETUP asks if it's OK to change the COMM.DRV= statement in your SYSTEM.INI file, allow it to do so. WinFax Pro 3.0 requires one of these communications drivers:
COMM.DRV (the standard Windows serial communications driver) TURBOCOM.DRV (a third party communication driver available on many BBS's) WFXCOMM.DRV (Delrina's new communications driver)
NOTE: The WFXCOMM.DRV file reportedly allows you to fax at 14.4K bps inside Windows. To receive the new file, download WFXCOM.ZIP from the Delrina BBS or call Delrina Customer support.
- Answer all other questions according to your preferences.
Using Class 1 And Class 2 Faxmodems Outside Windows*
If you don't always work in Windows, you can still setup WinFax Pro 3.0 to receive faxes on your faxmodem. WinFax Pro 3.0 includes a TSR program that operates while you are not Windows.
To load the fax TSR program:
- Change to the directory where you installed WinFax PRO 3.0
- Type: WFXTSR -w<path>
Replace <path> with the path to the WinFax PRO 3.0 directory.
To unload the fax TSR program:
- Change to the WinFax PRO 3.0 directory
- Type: WFXTSR -u
