How to Create Custom Logo Files

Disclaimer Of Information Overview

This information explains how to use several applications to create a logo file. Keep the following in mind when creating a logo file.

  • A logo file must be a graphics file in PCX format.

  • To be used as a logo, the PCX file must be in the FAX directory.

  • The logo file must be black and white (single color plane).

  • The image resolution must be 200 dots per inch (dpi) -- 300 dpi won't work. (Scanning programs and graphics packages typically create images at 300 dpi, but fax machines produce images at 200 dpi. You can circumvent this conflict by saving the image at 200 dpi [or lower]).

  • The width of the logo must be a multiple of 8 not greater than 1728 pixels (8.5 inches). The recommended height is 600 pixels (3 inches). Images longer than three inches will decrease the number of lines available in the text area of the cover page (36 lines with a logo height of 3 inches or less).

Creating A Logo With Ansel

Ansel is the software shipped with the Intel hand scanner.

  1. For logos that are mostly graphics, scan the image at 256 gray-scale setting and 200 dpi (higher dpi for intricate or fine graphics). For logos that are text, scan the image at B/W and 200 dpi.

  2. From the File dialog box, click on Save As. Select PCX for File Format. Click on Output Format, then select Error Diffusion for Document, Custom 200 for Destination, and Original Size for Document Size. Then enter a name for Filename (it must have the .PCX extension).

  3. Save the logo file to the FAX directory.
Creating A Logo With Corel Draw 2.0 & 3.0

Here's how to create a logo using Corel Draw version 2.0 or 3.0. (If you want to convert an existing image into a logo, open the file before going to step 1.)

  1. Choose Page Setup from the File menu, and change the page size to 10.625 inches by 5 inches.

  2. If you are creating a new image, make sure it does not extend beyond the top or sides of the page. Images that extend beyond the bottom of the page will work, but the text area of the cover page won't hold the maximum 36 lines of text.

If you are working with an existing document, choose Select All from the Edit menu. Then use Stretch and Mirror from the Transform menu to size and position the image to fit on the new page size.

  3. If using Corel Draw* 2.0:

    1. Choose Export from the File menu, select PCX for file type and 150dpi for resolution. Then name the file.

    If using Corel Draw* 3.0:

    1. Choose Export from the File menu, select PCX for file type, the press the OK button.

    2. Select Grays, select Black & White, then select 150dpi for resolution.

    3. Press the OK button.

  4. Copy the logo file to the FAX directory.
Deleting Black Line On Right Edge Of Logo

Windows Paintbrush* 3.0 puts a thin black line down the right edge of a fax. Unfortunately, Paintbrush won't let you view this line (let alone delete it). Follow these instructions to delete the line:

  1. From a DOS prompt, change to the directory where you saved your logo file (usually C:\FAX).

  2. Type DEBUG YOURLOGO.PCX (replace YOURLOGO.PCX with the name of your logo file) then press ENTER.

  3. Type e100 then press ENTER.

  4. Press the SPACE bar until you see "AF."

  5. Type BF then press ENTER.

  6. Type q then press ENTER.

  7. Type FAX V YOURLOGO.PCX then press ENTER.

  8. Click on the "Zoom" menu then select 1:1.

  9. Use the scroll bar near the top of the screen to view the right edge of the logo.

  10. Click on the Tools menu then select "Erase".

  11. Use the eraser to erase the black line at the right edge. Use the scroll bar at the left edge of the screen to scroll down, then erase the remainder of the line.

  12. When the line is completely erased, click on "Done" then click on "Save".

That's all there is to it. With a little practice, the process is very easy to complete!

Creating A Logo With Windows* Paintbrush

Once you're in Windows*:

  1. Double-click on the Paintbrush icon.

  2. Click on Options, then click on "Image Attributes..."

  3. From the Image Attributes menu, select:
    • pels for "Units".

    • If you're using Paintbrush 3.0, enter 1712 for "Width".
If you're using Paintbrush 3.1, enter 1728 for "Width".

    • 600 for "Height".

    • Black and White for "Colors".

    Click on OK.

NOTE: You must specify a width of 1712 pixels for Paintbrush 3.0 because Paintbrush 3.0 will add 16 pixels to the right-hand edge of the logo. Specifying 1728 would result in a logo file 1744 pixels, which is too wide! Paintbrush 3.1 doesn't add the extra pixels.

  4. Click on File, then click on New.

  5. Create the logo.

  6. Click on File, then click on Save As...

  7. Click on "Save File as Type:" and select "PCX files (*.PCX)".

  8. Name the logo file (to save the file directly to the FAX directory, include a path, such as C:\FAX\MYLOGO.PCX).

  9. Click on OK.
