Determine If You Have Release 2 Or Release 3
Before You Install The Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem
Determine whether you're using Release 2 or Release 3 of the Intel Card Manager Software.
The Release 2 package: Has a plastic "bubble pack" for the faxmodem card Is shipped with Intel FAXability and HyperAccess Lite software.
The Release 3 package: Has a flat front with a picture of the faxmodem card Is shipped with WinFax Lite and HyperAccess Lite software OR Delrina 4-in-1. Zenith* Z-Lite 320L: Compatible With Card Manager (Use Intel Installer)
Intel tested the Zenith* Z-LITE 320L system and found it COMPATIBLE with Intel's PCMCIA Faxmodem products and Card Manager software.
This system ships from the factory with PCMCIA device drivers, which cannot install Intel PCMCIA products. Before you run Intel's INSTALL utility, edit the CONFIG.SYS and SYSTEM.INI files and remark out the command lines for these device drivers.
The Zenith Z-LITE 320L system ships from the factory with a PC Card installer built into the BIOS. Intel's Card Manager software automatically disables this built-in PC Card installer. At this time, the only PC Cards supported by Intel's Card Manager software are Intel PCMCIA Cards. The application software provided by Intel requires the Intel Card Manager software to function. The user cannot use any of the Intel application software with the Zenith Z-LITE 320L system's built-in PC Card installer.
The Zenith* Z-LITE 320L system uses the built-in PC Card installer when the system is first booted up or RESUMEd, and any PC Cards in the system will be automatically configured. The Intel-provided Card Manager software then wipes out these configurations and re-configures any PC Card recognized by CCMGR.EXE.
Before Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:
- Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 256 X=D000-D2FF FRAME=E000
- In CONFIG.SYS, insert the word REM before any line device driver for the manufacturer's PCMCIA software.
- Save CONFIG.SYS, exit Windows completely, and reboot.
After Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:
- The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be: DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\SS365SL.EXE /ADA=0
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CS.EXE DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE
- The following lines have been added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE
PATH=C:\FAX;%PATH% C:\FAX\CASMODEM.EXE
Before Installing Intel's Release 3 Software:
- Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=D000-D2FF
- Save CONFIG.SYS, exit Windows completely, and reboot.
- Follow the installation procedure in the Intel Faxmodem Quick Start Guide.
After Installing Intel'S Release 3 Software:
If the manufacturer's PCMCIA software is present, the first line of your CONFIG.SYS file should be: DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CPR.SYS
If the manufacturer's PCMCIA Software is present, the last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be: [other PCMCIA drivers from the laptop manufacturer] DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0
If the Intel Card Manager Software is the only PCMCIA software present:
The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be: DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CCMSERV.EXE DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE /INST INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0
PCMCIA Faxmodem cards can use these settings:
UPPER MEMORY ranges:
- D000-DFFF: Available to Intel's Card Manager software.
- E000-EFFF: If you are using expanded memory, Intel recommends using this block as the page frame.
- B000-B7FF: Appears unused. Although possible, Intel doesn't recommend that EMS providers use a block in this range.
- C600-CFFF: Reserved for the system.
IRQs: 3, 5, 10, 11, or 15
NOTE: If installation fails because the IRQ number is invalid:
- Read the BIOS information for this system (following this note.)
- Follow the instructions in "Card Manager Software Using Invalid IRQ" (document 3462).
NOTE: Workaround solution for the error "Install can not find a valid IRQ for the card just inserted into the PCMCIA socket":
- Have the customer get REL3SW.EXE (download or mail it). Unarchive the contents of REL3SW.EXE into a CARDMGR directory OR If the customer has PKUNZIP, copy the contents of the installation disk to a CARDMGR directory and run PKUNZIP on the file DISK-1.ZIP.
- Manually add the 4 Intel device drivers lines into CONFIG.SYS: DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CCMSERV.EXE
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE /INST INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0
- Reboot. Do not run cardlist at this point, even though it says to.
- Run install from the disk.
I/O PORTS: 200-26Fh and 300-36Fh are available to Intel's Card Manager software. COM1 and LPT1 are enabled at the factory. You can configure the serial port to one of these combinations: COM1/IRQ4, COM2/IRQ3, or Disabled. You can configure the parallel port to one of these combinations: LPT1, LPT2, or Disabled.
Accessing BIOS SETUP: Press [Fn] and [F5] at the same time.

Intel tested the Zenith Z-Lite* 4/25 system and found it COMPATIBLE with Intel's PCMCIA Faxmodem products and Intel's Card Manager software. However, the faxmodem may not, at times, have access to the system's speaker. Therefore, the volume for audible feedback on the progress of faxes or data transmissions may be soft or completely inaudible.
The PCMCIA software that ships with the system works with the Intel Faxmodem for PCMCIA, but is NOT COMPATIBLE with Intel's Card Manager software or the fax and modem applications provided with the Intel Faxmodem. If you use the native PCMCIA software and the Intel Faxmodem is in the socket at boot time, the system locks up. If you insert the card after booting the computer, the native PCMCIA software and the Intel Faxmodem work together.
The system's native PCMCIA software is not installed unless you click the PCMCIA INFORMATION and INSTALLATION icon in the Zenith group. However, if you already installed the native software, it's in the C:\CARDWARE directory.
The BIOS of the Zenith Z-Lite* 4/25 system issues a PC Card removal event whenever the system is RESUMEd from SUSPEND mode. These card removal events may destroy currently running TSRs that don't take advantage of PC Card management software. Card removal events may also interfere with Intel's Card Manager software unless the Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem's COM port is specified on the CCMGR.EXE command line of AUTOEXEC.BAT (see the sample AUTOEXEC.BAT below).
Before Installing Intel'S Release 2 Software:
To use Intel's Card Manager software and the fax and modem applications shipped by Intel:
- Before running INSTALL, edit the CONFIG.SYS file and insert the REM command before any entries that start with DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE.
- In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 256 X=C000-D2FF
- Reboot the system.
- Run the INSTALL program, but DO NOT REBOOT when asked to remove the diskette.
- Instead, edit the CONFIG.SYS file so that the line containing RTINIT.EXE looks like this:
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F /XIRQ=15
- Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that its first two lines look like this:
C:\CARDMGR\INSTALL2.EXE C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /COM=[1, 2, 3 or 4] (Use a single digit to represent the COM port used by the faxmodem card.)
- Turn the power off, wait about 20 seconds, and turn the power on again. The INSTALL2 and FAXUTIL programs run automatically.
- Enter Windows and delete the icon for the Windows PCCard program.
NOTE: The line C:\CARDMGR\INSTALL2.EXE is automatically deleted from AUTOEXEC.BAT after installation.
After Installing Intel'S Release 2 Software:
- The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\SS365SL.EXE /ADA=0 DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CS.EXE DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F /XIRQ=15 DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE
- The following lines have been added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /COM=[1,2,3 or 4]
PATH=C:\FAX;%PATH% C:\FAX\CASMODEM.EXE
Before Installing Intel'S Release 3 Software:
