NCR Safari* 3150: Compatible With Card Manager Software

Intel tested the NCR 3150 system and found it COMPATIBLE with Intel® PCMCIA Faxmodem products and Intel's Card Manager software.

NCR changed its name to AT&T Global Information Solutions.

Before Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:

  1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 256 X=DD00-DFFF X=E800-EFFF

  2. In CONFIG.SYS, insert the word REM before any line device driver for the manufacturer's PCMCIA software.

  3. Save CONFIG.SYS, exit Windows completely, and reboot.

After Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:

  1. The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be: DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\SS365SL.EXE /ADA=0
    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CS.EXE
    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F /XIRQ=15 /MEM=DD00-DFFF
    /PV=7F
    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE

  2. The following lines have been added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
    C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE
    PATH=C:\FAX;%PATH%
    C:\FAX\CASMODEM.EXE

Before Installing Intel's Release 3 Software:

  1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=DD00-DFFF X=E800-EFFF

  2. Save CONFIG.SYS, exit Windows completely, and reboot.

  3. Follow the installation procedure in the Intel Faxmodem Quick Start Guide.

After Installing Intel's Release 3 Software:

If the manufacturer's PCMCIA software is present, the first line of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CPR.SYS

If the manufacturer's PCMCIA Software is present, the last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
[other PCMCIA drivers from the laptop manufacturer]
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE
INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0

If the Intel Card Manager Software is the only PCMCIA software present:

The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be: DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CCMSERV.EXE
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F /PV=7F /MEM=DD00-DFFF
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE /INST
INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0

Notes:

  • This system issues a PCMCIA Device Removal event when it is RESUMEd after a SUSPEND. The Intel Card Manager software automatically re-configures the PC Card, but you must exit and re-enter any non-Intel provided application that uses the PC Card before you can use that application again.

  • You can install Intel PCMCIA Faxmodems only on COM3/IRQ5 or COM4/IRQ5 in this system unless the trackball is disabled (then they can be installed on COM2/IRQ3). Applications provided by Intel will work without difficulty, but some DOS-based communication applications may have difficulties with COM3 or COM4.

PCMCIA Faxmodem cards can use these settings:

UPPER MEMORY ranges: This system identifies free Upper Memory Areas (UMAs) differently than other computers (7F instead of FF). You must identify upper memory ranges used by Intel's Card Manager software in the CONFIG.SYS file's EMS provider and RTINIT.EXE command lines.

  • C000-DFFF: Available to Intel's Card Manager software and EMS providers.

  • E800-EFFF: Power management. Exclude from the control of EMS providers.

IRQs:

  • 5 or 11.

  • 15: Exclude from Intel Card Manager software use.

  • 3: Disabling the trackball makes this IRQ available.

I/O PORTS: An 8-byte I/O address block within the ranges 200-26Fh and 300-36Fh. The external COM port (COM1) cannot be disabled. The trackball uses COM2/IRQ3, and can be disabled.

Accessing BIOS SETUP: Press [Esc] when the prompt appears during the boot process.

Ncr Safari* 3170: Compatible With Card Manager Software

The NCR 3170 has been tested and is compatible with Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem products and Intel's Card Manager software.

The NCR 3170 system turns power off to the PCMCIA socket when the system goes into SUSPEND mode, which causes the PC Card to lose its configuration. When the system is RESUMEd, Intel's Card Manager software will automatically re-configure the PCMCIA Card. However, if any application that doesn't take advantage of Intel's Card Manager software was running when the system was SUSPENDed, the user must exit and re-enter that application before it can have access to the PCMCIA Card.

Before Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:

  1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 256 X=DD00-DFFF

    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CS.EXE
    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F
    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE

  2. The following lines have been added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE
    PATH=C:\FAX;%PATH%
    C:\FAX\CASMODEM.EXE

Before Installing Intel's Release 3 Software:

  1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=DD00-DFFF

DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CPR.SYS

If the manufacturer's PCMCIA Software is present, the last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
[other PCMCIA drivers from the laptop manufacturer]
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE
INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0

If the Intel Card Manager Software is the only PCMCIA software present:

The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CCMSERV.EXE
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE /INST
INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0

PCMCIA Faxmodem cards can use these settings:

Upper Memory:
The C000-DFFF range is free and available for use by Card Services. The B000-B7FF range appears to be unused. (It is possible but not recommended to allow the B000-B7FF range to be used by an EMS provider.) The E000-EFFF range is filled with ROM and non-standard ROM and cannot be used by Card Manager software and probably should not be used by an EMS provider.

IRQs: 5, 10, 11, and 15 are available for use by Card Services.

I/O PORTS: 200-26Fh and 300-36Fh are open and can be used by Card Services.

Accessing BIOS SETUP: Press [FUNCTION] and [ESC] at the same time. The NCR 3170 screen can display 16 but defaults to 4 shades of gray. Pressing [FUNCTION] and [F2] keys at the same time makes some application software look better. Inverting the video (press [FUNCTION] and [F6]) yields the best video for DOS-based color programs.

Packard Bell* Diplomat: Compatible With Card Manager Software

Intel tested the Packard Bell Diplomat system and found it COMPATIBLE with Intel's PCMCIA Faxmodem products and Card Manager software. However, the faxmodem may not, at times, have access to the system's speaker. Therefore, audible feedback on fax progress or data transmissions may be soft or completely inaudible.

The PCMCIA software that ships with the system works with the Intel Faxmodem for PCMCIA, but is NOT compatible with Intel's Card Manager

software or the fax and modem applications provided with the Intel Faxmodem. If you use the native PCMCIA software and the Intel Faxmodem is in the socket at boot time, the system locks up. If you insert the card after booting the computer, the native PCMCIA software and the Intel Faxmodem work together.

The system's native PCMCIA software is not installed unless you click the PCMCIA INFORMATION and INSTALLATION icon in the Packard Bell group. However, if you already installed the native software, it's in the C:\CARDWARE directory.

The BIOS of the Packard Bell Diplomat system issues a PC Card removal event whenever the system is RESUMEd from SUSPEND mode. These card removal events may destroy currently running TSRs that don't take advantage of PC Card management software. Card removal events may also interfere with Intel's Card Manager software unless the Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem's COM port is specified on the CCMGR.EXE command line of AUTOEXEC.BAT (see the sample AUTOEXEC.BAT below).

Before Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:

To use Intel's Card Manager software and the fax and modem applications shipped by Intel:

  1. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and insert the REM command before any entries that start with DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE. Edit the EMM386 line to read: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 256 X=C000-D2FF

  2. Reboot the system.

  3. Run the INSTALL program, but DO NOT REBOOT when asked to remove the diskette. Instead EXIT TO DOS.

  4. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file so that the line containing RTINIT.EXE looks like this: DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F /XIRQ=15

  5. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file so that its first two lines look like this: C:\CARDMGR\INSTALL2.EXE C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /COM=[1, 2, 3 or 4] (Use a single digit to represent the COM port used by the faxmodem card.)

  6. Turn the power off, wait about 20 seconds, and turn the power on again. The INSTALL2 and FAXUTIL programs run automatically.

  7. Enter Windows and delete the icon for the Windows PCCard program.

    Note:
    After installation, the line C:\CARDMGR\INSTALL2.EXE is automatically deleted from AUTOEXEC.BAT.

After Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:
  1. The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:

    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\SS365SL.EXE /ADA=0
    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CS.EXE
    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F /XIRQ=15
    DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE

  2. The following lines have been added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /COM=[1, 2, 3 or 4]
    PATH=C:\FAX;%PATH%
    C:\FAX\CASMODEM.EXE

    Note:
    See the Packard Bell and Zenith Alternate CONFIG.SYS Files if you need to use device drivers from the CARDWARE directory instead of Intel's Card Manager software.

Before Installing Intel's Release 3 Software:

  1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=DD00-DFFF

DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CPR.SYS

If the manufacturer's PCMCIA Software is present, the last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
[other PCMCIA drivers from the laptop manufacturer]
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE
INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0

If the Intel Card Manager Software is the only PCMCIA software present:

The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be: DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CCMSERV.EXE
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE /INST
INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0

PCMCIA Faxmodem cards can use these settings:

Upper Memory ranges: D000-EFFF is available for EMS providers, the native PC Card software, and/or Intel's Card Manager software. C800-CDFF is unavailable to EMS providers - it is filled with ROM and may be used by the system.

IRQs: 3, 4, 5, 10 or 11 are available to the Packard Bell and Intel PCMCIA software. IRQ15 is NOT available. Add /XIRQ=15 to the RTINIT.EXE command line of CONFIG.SYS, as shown above.

I/O PORTS: An 8-byte I/O address block within the ranges 200-26Fh and 300-36Fh. This system comes with the external COM port disabled. This port can be enabled as COM1 or COM2. Accessing BIOS SETUP: Press the [Fn] and [F5] keys at the same time.

Packard Bell* Statesman: Compatible With Card Manager Software

Intel tested the Packard Bell Statesman system and found it COMPATIBLE with Intel's Card Manager software and PCMCIA Faxmodems.

The PCMCIA software that ships with the system works with the PCMCIA Faxmodem, but is NOT COMPATIBLE with Intel's Card Manager software or the fax and modem applications provided with the Intel Faxmodem.

The system has a configurable power switch, which you can set to OFF/ON or SUSPEND/RESUME. Set it to OFF/ON when installing the Intel Faxmodem for PCMCIA.

If the system will not power off unless it is in Windows:

  1. Make sure the C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE command line in CONFIG.SYS contains the /XIRQ=15 parameter.

  2. Cold-boot from within Windows.

  3. Press [Ctrl] [Alt] [S] to access the BIOS setup and configure the power switch as OFF/ON instead of SUSPEND/RESUME.

Note: To power off, you may need to press [Ctrl] [Alt] [Del] and then press the power off switch.

Before Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:

To use Intel's Card Manager software and the fax and modem applications shipped by Intel:

  1. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file and insert the REM command before any entries that start with DEVICE=C:\CARDWARE. Edit the EMM386 line to read: DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 256 I=B000-B7FF X=DD00-DFFF

  2. Reboot the system.

DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CPR.SYS

If the manufacturer's PCMCIA Software is present, the last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:
[other PCMCIA drivers from the laptop manufacturer]
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE
INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0

If the Intel Card Manager Software is the only PCMCIA software present:

The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be: DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CCMSERV.EXE
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE /IO=260-26F
DEVICE=C:\CARDMGR\CMGRDRVR.EXE /INST
INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR\CCMGR.EXE /D=0

PCMCIA Faxmodem cards can use these settings:

UPPER MEMORY ranges: C000-DFFF is available for EMS providers and/or Intel's Card Manager software. B000-B7FF is also available.

IRQs: 3, 4, 5, 10 or 11 are available to Packard Bell and Intel PCMCIA software. IRQ15 is NOT available. Add /XIRQ=15 to the RTINIT.EXE command line of CONFIG.SYS, as shown above.

I/O ADDRESSING: 200-26Fh and 300-36Fh.

Accessing BIOS SETUP: Press [Ctrl], [Alt], and [S] at the same time.

Packard Bell* And Zenith* Alternate Config.Sys Files

packard zenith alt

These CONFIG.SYS files run on the Packard Bell Diplomat and Statesman, and Zenith Z-Lite 4/25 and Z-Star 433 VL systems.

Sample CONFIG.SYS For Intel Faxmodems And Other Cards:

Note: Use these CONFIG.SYS files to run Intel PCMCIA Faxmodems and some other PC Cards. If you insert an Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem in the system at startup, the system locks up.

Microsoft* Mouse Drivers 9.01 And 9.02 And Logitech Mouse 6.23 Conflict With Casmodem

Symptom: MS Mouse driver versions 9.01 and 9.02 and Logitech Mouse driver version 6.23 conflict with CASMODEM, causing problems using the Intel Faxmodem (PCMCIA) 14.4 in DOS. CASMODEM must be in expanded memory (EMS) for this symptom to appear.

Note: CASMODEM is required by Intel's FAXability application. If your Intel Faxmodem was shipped with WinFax instead of FAXability, this problem does not occur.

Solution: Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT so that drivers are loaded in the following order:

CASMODEM Mouse
FAXTSR (used only if faxing under DOS)
FAXPOP (used only if faxing under DOS)

Your system may be locking up, making it impossible to edit AUTOEXEC.BAT.

If you have DOS 6.0 or higher:

  1. Turn the system's power off, then on again.

  2. When the message Starting MS-DOS appears on the screen, press [F5] to bypass CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.

  3. At the C:\ prompt, type:

    EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT

If you have a previous version of DOS, you need a startup diskette to bypass AUTOEXEC.BAT.

  1. Insert the startup diskette and power up the system.

  2. At the C:\ prompt, type:

    C:\DOS\EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT
    Another possible solution is to use MS Mouse driver version 9.00 or earlier.

Intel® Card Manager Software Installs Only Intel® Pcmcia Faxmodems

Note: If you have a PC Card other than an Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem, contact either the system manufacturer or PC Card manufacturer for PC Card software that complies with the PCMCIA 2.01 (or higher) specification.

This applies to:
Modems and Fax Boards
