Casio* Z-7000 PDAS: Not Compatible With PCMCIA Faxmodem

Casio* Z-7000 PDAs are NOT COMPATIBLE with Intel's PCMCIA Faxmodems and Card Manager software. These systems use a non-Intel processor and a non-DOS operating system. Intel hasn't tested these systems and can't verify the accuracy of these reports.

Compaq* Concerto 4/25 And 4/33: Compatible With Card Manager Software

Intel tested the Compaq Concerto* 4/25 and 4/33 systems and found them COMPATIBLE with Intel's PCMCIA Faxmodem products and Intel's Card Manager software.

Make sure you use the latest version of Intel's CMGRDRVR.EXE.

The Compaq Concerto* 4/25 and 4/33 systems ship with PC Card software supplied by Compaq. The Intel Card Manager software (with the new CMGRDRVR.EXE) is COMPATIBLE with the Compaq software.

Use the Compaq Concerto* system's Windows-based setup utility to enable the PCMCIA socket. If the system's PCMCIA socket isn't enabled, INSTALL may fail, or INSTALL may complete without errors, but INSTALL2 will fail.

To enable the PCMCIA socket:

  1. Start Windows.

  2. Select the Compaq Utilities group.

  3. Select the Computer Setup icon.

  4. Click the PCMCIA button.

  5. Click Options.

  6. Enable "PCMCIA Standard Drivers".

  7. Exit Windows before installing the Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem.

To conserve conventional memory, load only the PC Card device drivers required for the PC Cards you plan to use.

When the Compaq Concerto* 4/25 and 4/33 systems go into SUSPEND mode, they turn the PCMCIA socket's power OFF, causing the PC Card to lose its configuration values. When power is RESUMEd, Intel's Card Manager software automatically re-configures the PCMCIA card. However, if any communications application that uses the PC Card without taking advantage of Intel's Card Manager software was running when power was SUSPENDed, you must exit and re-enter the application before the application can regain access to the PCMCIA Card. To avoid exiting and re-entering applications when power resumes, enter your system's BIOS setup and turn the PCMCIA socket's power to ON.

The Compaq Concerto* systems use the Cirrus Logic controller. Use the /IRQ=B parameter of CS.EXE in your CONFIG.SYS file to reserve IRQ 11 as the Card Status Change IRQ.

NOTE: In some cases, the system may not work with IRQ 11 as the CSC IRQ. If the system hangs with the /IRQ=B parameter of CS.EXE, try using /IRQ=A which reserves IRQ 10 as the CSC IRQ.

Before Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:

  1. Edit your CONFIG.SYS file as a plain text file. In CONFIG.SYS, edit the EMM386.EXE line to read:

    DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM 256 X=DD00-DFFF

  2. Save CONFIG.SYS, exit Windows completely, and reboot.

After Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:

  1. The last lines of your CONFIG.SYS file should be:

Compaq Contura* Aero 4/25: Compatible With Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem

Intel tested the Compaq Contura Aero* 4/25 system and found it COMPATIBLE with Intel PCMCIA Faxmodems and Release 3 of Intel's Card Manager software.

This computer contains a PCMCIA chipset made by VSLI and comes from the factory with SystemSoft's CARDSOFT PCMCIA software. The Intel Faxmodems for PCMCIA can work either with or without the factory-installed PCMCIA software.

This computer has an external diskette drive that connects through the PCMCIA socket. The computer's BIOS recognizes this drive and doesn't need any PCMCIA software to operate. However, during installation, INSTALL fails when it asks you to insert the Intel Faxmodem into the PCMCIA slot, which is already used by the diskette drive.

To avoid this problem, either connect your Compaq Aero system to another computer using INTERLNK (see your DOS manual for more information) or copy the Intel Software disk onto your hard drive and run INSTALL from there.

Installing Intel® Card Manager Release 3 After Release 2

The Compaq Contura Aero* is not compatible with Release 2 of the Intel Card Manager Software. If you have unsuccessfully tried to install Release 2:

  1. Obtain the following from Intel:

    • REL3SW.EXE, Release 3 of the Card Manager software;

    • Document #3402, "Correcting Installation Errors".

  2. Follow the instructions in document 3402 for reinstalling the software.

  3. Instead of reinstalling Release 2, copy REL3SW.EXE to the C:\CARDMGR directory.

  4. Enter the following commands from the DOS prompt:

    CD \CARDMGR
    UPDATE

  5. Then, edit your CONFIG.SYS file so that the PCMCIA command lines look like those in the next section.

NOTES: The words in parentheses after the semicolon (;) are for your information only. There is no reason to copy them into the CONFIG.SYS file. If your AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains the line C:\CARDMGR.EXE /D=0 , omit the line INSTALL=C:\CARDMGR.EXE /D=0 from CONFIG.SYS. You must use one line or the other, but using both will cause an error. If you have a PCMCIA memory card, exclude the D000-DFFF range from use by your memory manager (the first CONFIG.SYS line above does this). You may not be able to use the faxmodem, EMS memory and a PCMCIA memory card simultaneously. If you don't have a memory card, you can exclude a smaller range (try DC00-DFFF). If your CONFIG.SYS file includes command lines for C:\CARDMGR\CCMSERV.EXE or C:\CARDMGR\RTINIT.EXE, delete those lines. CCMSERV and RTINIT are NOT COMPATIBLE with the Contura Aero.

To configure your Compaq Aero system for PCMCIA cards:

  1. Edit CONFIG.SYS, including command lines from the above section as needed.

  2. Reboot the computer.

  3. At the DOS prompt, type C:\CPQDOS\CSALLOC /G

This computer comes with COM1 and LPT1 built into the motherboard.

PCMCIA faxmodems can use these settings:

Dell* 320SLI And 325SLI: Compatible With Card Manager Software

Intel tested the Dell* 320SLi and 325SLi systems and found them COMPATIBLE with Intel's PCMCIA Faxmodem products and Intel's Card Manager software. However, the these systems don't allow users to hear any speaker action (beeps or dial tones) during modem and fax operations. This means that customers don't have audible feedback on fax or data transmission progress.

On the Dell* 320SLi and 325SLi systems, received faxes have black lines or black dots when using Intel's FAXability software (either the DOS or Windows versions). Faxes sent from this system look fine and have no errors, and all other functions of both the Card Manager software and application software work without errors.

If the quality of received faxes is unacceptable, you may call Intel to request a copy of Quick Link II, which replaces the Intel fax application. Since Quick Link II isn't Card Manager aware, insert the Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem into the Dell system before running any Quick Link II program or utility. If you remove and re-insert the Intel PCMCIA Faxmodem, Quick Link II ceases to work until you quit and re-start it.

To install Quick Link II over an Intel fax application:

  1. Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT, removing the CASMODEM.EXE command line.

  2. Delete all the Intel fax application files.

  3. Remove all the Intel fax application directories.

  4. Reboot the system.

  5. Run the QuickLink II installation utility.

Before Installing Intel's Release 2 Software:
