EtherExpress™ PRO/10 and PRO/10+ ISA adapters
Windows* XP Drivers for the EtherExpress™ PRO/10 and PRO/10+ ISA Adapters

Solution:

Windows* XP is supplied with drivers for the EtherExpress™ PRO/10 and PRO/10+ ISA adapters. However, these drivers are for Plug-and-Play versions only. They will not work with early non-Plug-and-Play versions of the PRO/10, and will only work with PRO/10 Plug-and-Play and PRO/10+ ISA adapters if the adapter is set to Plug-and-Play mode.

The following early model PRO/10 ISA adapters do not support Plug-and-Play and will not work at all in Windows XP.

Product Code PWA Number Connectors
PCLA8200 350409-xxx TPE, BNC, AUI
PCLA8205 309917-xxx TPE, BNC, AUI
PCLA8210 350446-xxx TPE, BNC
PCLA8215 350689-xxx TPE, BNC
PCLA8220 309920-xxx TPE
PCLA8225 350690-xxx TPE

Later model PRO/10 ISA (product codes ending in an A) and PRO/10+ ISA (product codes ending in a B) do support Plug and Play. These versions should be automatically detected if Plug and Play is enabled. See the Network Adapter & Driver Identification Guide for assistance in identifying your adapter.

To see if Plug and Play is enabled on your adapter?

  1. Boot the computer to DOS--not a DOS window. (See "Executing a Clean Boot to DOS" below for instructions.)

  2. Then run the PRO/10 ISA test and configuration program SOFTSET2.EXE. If your computer has a Plug and Play BIOS, this program will display the message "Plug and Play detected. Grayed menu items are unavailable." This means that a Plug and Play environment has been detected, not that the adapter has Plug and Play enabled.

Note: If you do not have a copy of this program, download the latest version of the driver software in the archive E10DISK.EXE and extract it to your hard drive.

Once in SOFTSET2:

  1. Highlight "Change Adapter Configuration" and press "Enter."

  2. Then highlight "Advanced Options Menu" and press "Enter."

Plug and Play will be displayed (unless this is one of the early versions listed above) and will show enabled or disabled.

To enable Plug-and-Play:

  1. Highlight "Plug and Play" and press "Enter."

  2. Select Enabled and press "Enter."

  3. Press "Esc" to exit this menu, and then press "F10" to save your settings.

  4. Be sure to test the adapter before exiting the program by selecting "Test adapter," and then "Test adapter" again in the next menu.

Note: Windows should always automatically detect PRO/10+ PCI adapters.

Executing a Clean Boot to DOS

MS-DOS* and PC-DOS*
If you are running DOS version 5.0 or lower:

  1. Rename the files CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT in the root directory of your boot disk.

  2. Then reboot the computer.

If you are running DOS versions 6.0 or higher:

  • Boot the computer and, as soon as the words "Starting MS-DOS?" appear on the screen, press the F5 key.

Windows 95

  • Boot the computer and, as soon as the words "Starting Windows 95?" appear on the screen, press the keys Shift and F5 simultaneously.

Windows 98
Format a diskette and make it bootable. To do this:

  1. Start a DOS session.

  2. Put a blank diskette in the A: drive.

  3. Within the DOS session, enter FORMAT A: /S.

When the diskette is formatted, reboot the computer from the diskette.

If the computer boots from the hard drive even with the diskette inserted, you may have to change the computers BIOS settings to boot from the diskette. To do this:

  1. Enter the BIOS setup and look for settings related to booting or boot sequence.

  2. Change the boot device order so that "floppy drive" or "removable devices" is listed before the hard drive.

All Other Operating Systems
Find or create a DOS bootable diskette with no CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file in the root directory and boot the computer from that diskette.

Operating System:
Windows XP Professional*, Windows XP Home Edition*
