The table below lists different transfer modes supported by Serial ATA (SATA) devices along with the theoretical transfer rate. Please refer to the documentation that was bundled with your device or contact the hardware manufacturer for more information about your specific device.
Note: This table contains theoretical transfer rates of SATA transfer modes. Your actual transfer rates can vary from the information contained in this table. In order to take advantage of Serial ATA, your system must meet specific requirements.
SERIAL ATA TRANSFER RATES ASSOCIATED WITH TRANSFER MODES
| Mode |
Theoretical Transfer Rate |
Effective Maximum Throughput** |
| Generation 1 |
1.5Gb/s |
150MB/s |
| Generation 2 |
3Gb/s |
300MB/s | |
** Because the data is encoded using 8b/10b encoding, the effective maximum throughput is 80% of the theoretical transfer rate. An example of the 1.5Gb/s theoretical transfer rate: (1500Mcycles/sec)x(1 bit/cycle)x(8bits data/10 total bits transferred)x(1 byte/8bits) = 150 MB/s.
