48-bit LBA BIOS Support

48-bit BIOS support is only needed if you are using Windows* Me, Windows 98 SE, or Windows 98. While 48-bit LBA BIOS support is not needed for Windows XP or Windows 2000, it may add certain 48-bit BIOS functionality. This additional functionality is limited to items such as the BIOS setup menu, Power-On Self Test (POST) screen, and operation in a MS-DOS*-based environment.

Windows* XP or Windows* 2000 Users
48-bit LBA BIOS support is not necessary. Follow the Large Hard Drive Installation Instructions.

Windows* Me, Windows* 98SE, and Windows* 98 Users
An MS-DOS-based 48-bit LBA test program is available that can tell you if your BIOS is 48-bit LBA capable.

  • If your BIOS does not currently support 48-bit LBA, you will need to obtain an updated BIOS from your motherboard or system manufacturer.
  • If your BIOS currently has 48-bit LBA support, no BIOS changes are necessary. Follow the Large Hard Drive Installation Instructions.

Additional information on why the BIOS may limit FDISK when partitioning hard drives can be found in this Microsoft* Knowledge Base article .
