Sun Software and Solutions Optimized for Intel® Processors

Sun Enterprise Servers Built with Intel® Processors

Sun and Intel are collaborating to enable and optimize key Sun software products to run best on multi-core Intel® Xeon® processors. This joint software work spans the Solaris* and OpenSolaris* operating system (OS), Sun Studio, MySQL*, and Java.

The optimization of the Solaris* OS has been focused on both Intel microarchitecture and system level enhancements which will continue to expand into future generations of Intel processors and technologies.

The combination of energy efficient and multi–core Intel silicon with Solaris capabilities is taking system performance, reliability and security to new levels.

Hardware that unleashes software capabilities – Solaris* and OpenSolaris*

Enabling innovative Intel silicon technologies in the Solaris* OS is key focus of Intel and Sun’s joint engineering. For the Intel® Xeon® processor 5500 series, Sun and Intel collaborated to enable Solaris* 10 and OpenSolaris* to take advantage of the next-generation silicon capabilities. The joint engineering work has been focused on optimizing and enabling the Solaris* operating system to provide outstanding performance, energy efficiency and reliability. Intel has been a key contributor and participant in the open source OpenSolaris* Community to enable these innovations in Solaris*.

Optimizing performance out of the box - Sun* Java

Sun* Java delivers highly optimized performance on Intel® architecture, right out of the box. The ongoing collaboration between Intel and Sun has resulted in a high level of optimizations made to the Sun Java Virtual Machine specifically for the Intel® Xeon® processor. Developers can get excellent Java performance simply from the choice of systems and Java, before taking any specific tuning steps.

Powerful solutions empowering IT - MySQL*

Working together, Intel® and MySQL* are creating powerful solutions to help IT organizations realize the full value of their infrastructure investments. The engineering engagement focuses on support for Intel® Xeon® processor-based systems with MySQL 5.0*. The use of the Intel® C/C++ Compiler is used to get high-performance distributions of MySQL*, support of datacenter virtualization and server consolidation, and delivery of MySQL* to customers of Intel® processor-based servers world-wide through the Intel® Enabled Server Acceleration Alliance (Intel® ESAA).
