Use the counter monitor feature of the Intel® VTune™ Performance Analyzer to collect and display performance counter data. Counter monitor selectively polls performance counters, which are grouped categorically into performance objects.
With the VTune analyzer, you can:
- Monitor selected counters in performance objects.
- Correlate performance counter data with data collected by other features in the VTune analyzer, such as sampling.
- Trigger the collection of counter data on events other than a periodic timer.

Performance counters help you understand the cause-and-effect relationship between the computer's subsystems and your application. If you develop application-specific counters using
Performance DLLs, the VTune analyzer will also collect and display these counters.
You create a batch file with the control program, run it, and collect performance data about your application performance overnight. Later, you can launch the VTune analyzer user interface to view the collected data and analyze it using such powerful VTune analyzer features as merge, Intel® Tuning Assistant, and others.
