Intel Chairman: Education, Technology Investments Paves Way For Innovation

Intel Launches e-Government, Education, Wireless Initiatives

ANKARA, Turkey, Nov. 14, 2005 – Investment in education and technology is vital to Turkey’s long-term growth, said Intel Corporation Chairman Craig Barrett during a press conference.

“The government can further increase Turkey’s competitiveness by accelerating technology investments,” said Barrett.

Barrett discussed the role education plays in a country’s ability to compete in a rapidly evolving digital economy. “Technology access and education are the foundation to advance Turkey’s economy,” he said. “Governments, industries and educators must work together to transform education and integrate technology into the learning process,” he added.

Barrett stated that through the Intel® Teach to the Future program the commitment to train an additional 20,000 teachers by the end of 2006 is on track. The program, a worldwide effort to help teachers apply digital technology to improve student learning, was launched in Turkey two years ago with 30,000 teachers trained to date.

Barrett unveiled www.Skoool.tr, an interactive learning web site Intel created with content developed by expert teachers that will provide interactive math and science lessons for students in their native language. He also announced the Intel® Learn program, an after-school, community-based program, will be offered in Turkey. The program teaches computer, problem-solving and collaboration skills to children 8-16 years old.

Barrett praised the government for its plans to establish an IT classroom in every school and its work with Turk Telecom to deploy high-speed Internet to all schools. Barrett announced that Intel and Turk Telecom today started the first WiMAX wireless technology pilot in Turkey, connecting a school in Yozgat to the internet.

“WiMAX is an economical way to provide Internet access over long distances, connecting remote areas without relying on legacy telecom networks,” said Barrett.

“These activities are part of Intel’s long-term commitment to the region and are part of the recently launched the Intel® Digital Transformation Initiative for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa and the Intel® Engineering Excellence Program,” Barrett said. To further Turkey’s digital evolution Intel is working with the government and other companies to form a Government Solutions Center within the METU Technopark.

“Intel is accelerating our investments in Turkey in a number ways, ranging from expanding our education to increasing our investment in digital accessibility to support broadband deployment in the region,” Barrett said.
