Intel Shows Support For Science Education At NSTA 2000 Convention

ORLANDO, Fla., April 6, 2000 - Aimed at helping science teachers educate and excite students about science, Intel Corporation today showcased a range of education programs in its booth at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) convention 2000 (#970). The booth highlights four areas: the use of science fair competitions to teach critical thinking skills; how Conservation International is using the Internet to teach biodiversity and conversation science; the new education edition of Intel® Play™ QX3™ Microscope; and how teachers in grades 5-9 can demystify how technology works with Intel's free "The Journey Inside" Education Kit.

Science Competitions
Science competitions provide a natural way for teachers to extend classroom science into the real world of scientific research. Intel encourages more science teachers to use this effective method through its support of two major science competitions - the Intel® International Science and Engineering Fair and the Intel® Science Talent Search.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) is the world's largest international precollege science competition. More than 1,200 high school students from over 45 countries participate. The weeklong competition, now in its 51st year, will be held in Detroit, Mich., from May 7-12.

The Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS), America's oldest and most highly regarded precollege science competition, provides an incentive and arena for U.S. high school seniors to complete an original research project and have it recognized by a national jury of highly regarded professional scientists. Total awards for the Intel STS are $1.2 million and include cash awards to semifinalists, finalists, and their schools. Find out more at www.intel.com/education.

Learning about Biodiversity
Conservation International (CI) is a field-based, non-profit organization that uses science, economics, policy, and community education to promote biodiversity conservation in tropical rain forests and other endangered ecosystems worldwide. Intel has become CI's key partner in finding ways to harness the power of technology as a force for conservation. CI and Intel will show a prototype Web site scheduled for launch in summer 2000. It will allow students to learn first-hand research methods from scientists in the field and access data on endangered ecosystems from around the world. CI can be found at www.conservation.org.

Intel® Play™ QX3™ Microscope
The Intel® Play™ QX3™ Computer Microscope, jointly developed by Intel and Mattel engineers and toy designers, offers unique features and capabilities not available with traditional (optical with eye piece) and electronic (TV-connected) microscopes. Users can view images on a computer monitor; capture and manipulate still and video images; generate hard copy output; create time-lapse videos; and export images in standard file formats. The new education edition features resources so teachers can integrate the microscope into the classroom. Find out more about the education edition of the microscope at http://www.learningcompanyschool.com.

The Journey Inside Education Kit
With over 100,000 kits shipped since 1994, The Journey Inside Education Kit provides in-depth, easy-to-use materials free of charge to science, math and computer teachers in grades 5-9. The curriculum helps teachers demystify computers and teach students the science behind computer and microprocessor technology. Find out more at www.intel.com/education.

Intel Innovation in Education
Intel's participation at NSTA 2000 is part of the Intel Innovation in Education initiative, a global, multimillion dollar effort to help realize the possibilities of science and technology in education. The goal is to prepare today's teachers and students for tomorrow's demands. Intel develops and supports education programs that help meet the needs of students and communities worldwide through improving science, math, engineering and technology education; improving education through the effective use of technology in classrooms; and broadening access to technology and technical careers.
