The vehicle was built by the Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University, led by Dr. William L. "Red" Whittaker, the Fredkin Research Professor of Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University. Sandstorm will take part in the Grand Challenge Race on March 13, in which driverless, modified vehicles will have 10 hours to traverse a 210 mile route from Barstow, Calif. to Las Vegas, Nev.
