The home PC is evolving into a digital media platform, perfect for home entertainment, that brings together your digital media content and allows you to access video, music and images. Intel has been driving this growing convergence between computing platforms and consumer electronics (CE) devices, focusing on creating enjoyable home entertainment experiences for the digital home.
A reflection of this was our creation early in 2005 of the Digital Home Group within Intel. This group develops computing and communications platforms for use by consumers in the emerging digital home, with emphasis on living room entertainment applications and consumer electronics devices.
Intel's digital home vision consists of interoperable devices in the home that are capable of sharing digital media across a home network. This allows, for example, the easy transfer of pictures from a digital camera to a PC for editing, and then to a large-screen TV for viewing. It means you can use your home system to download a movie from an online vendor, and then play it through your DVD player or TV, or download music and play it on your home stereo. Our Intel® Core™2 processor with Viiv™ technology is the first to offer these capabilities.
Intel, as one of the founders and strong supporters of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA—formerly the Digital Home Working Group), is among those leading the effort to converge PCs, consumer electronics, and mobile technologies in the home.
Our move to multi-core processors, and the increased multitasking they enable, will allow even greater freedom within the digital home. With Intel® multi-core processors, a home user can edit photos while recording a TV show through a digital video recorder while a child—in another room of the house—streams a music file from the same computing platform. Our ultimate goal is to enable consumers to access digital content from any device, anytime and anywhere, both inside the home and on-the-go. |
