Remote management of networked embedded devices lowers IT support costs by reducing the number of onsite visits traditionally required to diagnose and fix problems. Now, with the advanced manageability and maintenance features of Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT), it's possible to query, restore, upgrade and protect devices remotely, even when they are not functioning, powered off or experiencing software failures. Intel AMT is one of the technologies that is part of Intel® vPro™ technology
How it Works
Providing a significant remote management breakthrough, Intel AMT implements a unique capability (i.e., circuit) in the Intel® chipset that can access and control the system, even when the system is powered off or the software is corrupted. This circuit establishes a link that allows the system to communicate with a management console without relying on the system’s standard networking functionality.
Key Benefits
Since devices can be diagnosed remotely, software issues can be repaired over the wire and failed hardware components identified in advance, so that technicians arrive with the appropriate parts in hand. Intel AMT also proactively protects networks by automatically downloading the latest virus signatures and putting infected devices into quarantine. Remote on/off switching allows companies to shut down devices after hours, thereby reducing utility costs. Software and hardware inventories can also be conducted remotely.
Industrial Scenario
Factory robots and various industrial systems are often built on different platforms. This makes it difficult and time-consuming to manually track assets and keep them up to date with the latest software, policies and licenses. IT professionals can remotely query, update and inventory factory floor systems from a single management console regardless of the operating system or platform configuration. Asset information resides in the system's non-volatile memory, and it can be accessed by the console regardless of the state of the machine.
Retail Scenario
Although most retailers could power down some systems at the close of business to save power, many don't because IT departments typically send software and data updates during off hours. A solution is to configure remote management software, based on Intel AMT, to turn systems off after work hours and turn them back on when IT requires access. This feature, combined with the power-efficiency of Intel® processors, can generate considerable cost savings and help protect the environment.
Requires activation and a system with a corporate network connection, an Intel® AMT-enabled chipset, network hardware and software. For notebooks, Intel AMT may be unavailable or limited over a host OS-based VPN, when connecting wirelessly, on battery power, sleeping, hibernating or powered off. Results dependent upon hardware, setup & configuration. For more information, visit www.intel.com/technology/platform-technology/intel-amt/
