Additional Overview Information
The Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software v10.5 works in conjunction with Intel® PRO/Wireless Network Connection hardware to connect your notebook or desktop computer to a wireless LAN.
Intel PROSet/Wireless Software provides the freedom and flexibility to work and play without hunting for a phone jack, network cable, or plugging in a special card. Using industry tested compatibility, you can use the software to easily connect to wireless LAN networks in your home, at the office, or on the road at hotspots in airports, hotels and coffee shops.+
As enterprises continue to deploy and invest in WLAN infrastructure, Intel is helping enable additional usage models and functionality that will put their WLAN investment to even greater use. New capabilities include using 802.11e QoS to make VoIP calls, and greater control over centrally deploying corporate wide profiles and settings on clients.
In addition to supporting standards-based solutions, Intel PROSet/Wireless Software is designed to support Cisco Compatible Extensions* v4.0. Intel is the lead collaborator with Cisco on Cisco Compatible Extensions. Intel PROSet/Wireless Software is available from a variety of notebook manufacturers to address the demanding needs of their IT customers.

| Security |
Authentication Types Supported: 802.11i WPA§ and WPA2§, (certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance for interoperability), 802.1X (EAP-TLS, TTLS, MD5, PEAP, LEAP, EAP-FAST).
Authentication Protocols: PAP, CHAP, MD5, GTC, MS-CHAP, MS-CHAPv2.
Encryption: 64-bit and 128-bit WEP, AES-CCMP, CKIP, TKIP.
Single Sign On Support - a single set of credentials authenticates a user to the wireless network and to their machine/domain during the Windows* login session. Authentication types supported are: EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, LEAP, PEAP and EAP-FAST. Single Sign On profiles may also contain machine certificates and user credential based authentication.
Support for Cisco* Compatible Extensions v4.0.
EAP-SIM Support - SIM-enabled laptop is able to connect to a hotspot that has an agreement with the user's cell-phone network. |
| Manageability |
Central profile management
 |
Remote creation and distribution of connection profiles. |
 |
Remotely-managed Global Policies - enables an administrator to limit user access to individual network or even individual APs. |
PROSet IT Administration Tool - provides administrators with run-time configurable system-wide options, global policy settings, as well as configurable install-time options which users are unable to alter.
Installation package creator - Allows IT managers to create a customized install package that can be pushed to clients via software distribution tools. The package may contain profiles, driver/application settings, driver updates and specific application components. Once the settings are selected, the tool automatically creates a self extracting executable file.
Wake on WLAN - mobile client maintains a connection with the access point, and can be remotely woken up to distribute software patches, virus scan definition files etc.
Selective Install Options - enables the IT manager to install only the desired components of the software. |
| Network Robustness |
802.11e QoS for VoIP: New API specifically designed to allow optimized VoIP softphone applications to prioritize and reserve bandwidth using 802.11e QoS parameters.
Business Class Wireless Suite:
 |
Optimal AP Selection Technology: Improves client and network performance by more efficient and proactive roaming to optimal access points. As a result, traffic is load balanced more effectively across AP's. |
 |
Enhanced VoIP Quality Technology: In addition to reserving bandwidth for voice traffic using 802.11e QoS, it provides improved network statistics to VoIP softphone clients. Optimized softphone clients can then automatically change behavior in response to changing network conditions. Support for wideband codecs also improves call clarity for calls made between softphones. |
|
| Ease of Use |
Simplified and intuitive user interface.
Profile Management:
 |
WLAN connections are saved as profiles to automatically connect when the network is available. |
 |
Easy and secure switching between networks - multiple profiles in priority order, each with their own security settings, enables users to automatically, and more securely, connect to networks with different security settings. |
 |
Additional profile management capabilities. Supports on-demand profiles that will only be activated at the user's request. Also allows launching a program when a wireless connection is made for a specific profile. For example, this would allow a user to automatically launch their VPN software when connecting to their office WLAN network. |
Ability to toggle between Intel PROSet/Wireless and Microsoft Windows* XP Wireless Zero Configuration Service
Greatly simplified way to connect to networks configured with WEP, WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK security. Automatically detects the security type that the WLAN access point is configured for.
Wireless radio on/off. |
| Supported Operating Systems |
Microsoft* Windows* XP (Professional, Home, Tablet)
Microsoft Windows 2000
