| Sanpaolo IMI invests in VoIP |
| Wireless mobility and VoIP solutions to reduce telephone costs and improve customer relations. |
|
Sanpaolo IMI is one of the three largest banking and financial groups in Italy with over 3,200 branches, serving both business and private customers. Sanpaolo IMI strongly believes in the competitive advantages offered by technology and is increasing the Group’s investment in innovation and IT solutions.
In 2005, Sanpaolo IMI started to introduce wireless mobility with a pilot project in its data center. After one year, the Group decided to extend this pilot project to several branches and also integrate it with VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) solutions to reduce costs and improve efficiency of internal communications and client services.
Intel and Cisco proposed a VoIP solution that delivers rich, reliable and cost-effective services, and is also scalable to adapt to future requirements to enable the introduction of new services in the future. The solution was integrated as a natural extension to the existing wireless network, and includes Intel-based desktops, notebooks and PDAs installed with Cisco IP Communicator* software, with Cisco Unified CallManager* software running on Intel® Xeon™ based servers. According to Sanpaolo IMI initial estimates, the VoIP system will help to reduce telecommunications costs by up to 30 percent for phone calls globally, and it will also have an impact on the costs of fixed phone lines. As part of the project, notebooks with Intel® Centrino® processor technology were provided to consultants of the headquarters and local branches in order to improve customer relations. For example, consultants can offer their clients real time assessments of their investment portfolio, as well as propose new opportunities on the basis of real-time information. A further advantage of the VoIP solution in enhancing customer service is the automated routing of incoming calls to the professional who is following a certain account or client.
The complete integration between the VoIP and email systems of the Group, which has been carried out in the first quarter of 2006, is already giving Sanpaolo IMI several advantages: first of all the possibility to receive messages by e-mail – as attached audio files – while the recipient is away from his or her desk. Moreover the company’s address book and the IP communications network are linked together, making call management easier. Therefore, each client device of the bank’s IT network, be it an IP phone or a portable PC, is enabled to make calls at the touch of a button.
