iDirect Chooses Intel® IXP425 Network Processor to Run the Core of its Broadband Over Satellite Solutions

Abstract:
Who is iDirect Technologies*?
iDirect Technologies develops 2-way satellite-based broadband access solutions. The company sells its solutions to network operators and telecom providers, who use the iDirect technologically advanced hubs, servers, routers and application software to enable broadband Internet access to geographically dispersed customers around the globe.

Business Needs:
Service providers are turning to satellite-based broadband to provide connectivity to users that might not otherwise have high-speed Internet access. Remote towns, ocean-going vessels, airborne travelers, disaster-stricken regions - all require connectivity, but traditional land lines are either impractical or infeasible. As a leader in satellite-based broadband infrastructure equipment, iDirect knew they could deliver the solutions that enable connectivity in these different settings. But iDirect also needed to keep costs down to compete with land-line solutions in terms of both quality and pricing, even though satellite bandwidth is inherently expensive.
The Challenge:
When iDirect planned to extend its product line to meet growing demand for satellite-based services, company engineers quickly determined that their legacy microprocessor was not able to deliver the necessary performance, scalability and cost-effectiveness. Engineers sought alternatives that could meet several criteria: 100 percent performance improvement at a lower cost, integrated features like encryption, low power consumption and Ethernet MACs, and the ability to "turn on" features that were specific to certain products. In other words, iDirect needed a processing platform with a high degree of flexibility to enable product line scalability and lower costs.
The Solution:
iDirect chose the Intel® IXP425 network processor as the core of the platform for its iNFINITI* line of satellite-based broadband routers. High performance, strong encryption, low power and a highly integrated feature set of the IXP425 enabled iDirect to meet all of the functional requirements for multiple solutions with a single processing platform. "With the Intel IXP425 network processor, we were able to make cost-effective use of our development resources, saving both time and money," explains Conor Foley, Lead Engineer at iDirect. "The highly integrated processor also lowered the power requirements and board real estate demands - big benefits in terms of our overall costs."
