Enjoying life in Bangkok
Since the 18th century, Bangkok has been Thailand's most important political, cultural and commercial center, also its capital and a national treasure. Its attractions include Buddhist temples, such as the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), which is a compound full of Thai arts, including the Emerald Buddha, the most honored image of Buddha in the country. The Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) stands on the Chao Phraya riverbank across from the Grand Palace. Its 80-meter-tall pagoda is encrusted with porcelain. These are just a few of the endless temples made from various precious materials in different architectural styles you can view throughout Bangkok.
The Golden Mount within Wat Saket houses Buddhist relics and offers a panoramic view of old Bangkok. The delicately carved Royal Barges are on display just off the Chao Phraya. The Dusit Zoo beside the Royal Plaza displays a fine collection of African and Asian animals. Bangkok also has beautiful parks and botanical gardens, as well as winding canals that originally earned the city the name of "Venice of the East."
Other enjoyable elements of Thai culture include "Muay Thai," or Thai boxing, that you can view in many stadiums throughout the city, as well as various cultural performances. You can get traditional Thai massage, similar to assisted yoga stretching, at places all over the city. Bangkok also offers plentiful public transportation, and air-conditioned shopping centers where you can go to escape the heat and pick up some Thai silk and artistic handicrafts. Last but not least is perhaps Thailand's greatest claim to fame, Thai food, with its unique, exotic flavors.
