Saudi Arabia is an intriguing country with beautiful deserts and mountains, as well as many interesting archaeological sites. Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia since 1932, is an oil-rich area that has evolved into a high-tech, modern city. The oldest area of Riyadh is Al-Bathaa, which sits right in its center. West of this area is the Riyadh Museum, where you'll find pieces of Arabian history going all the way back to the Stone Ages.
Other museums in Riyadh include the Masmak Fortress, built in 1865 and updated in the 1980's, as well as the King Saud University Museum. Riyadh's Dir'aiyah, the ruins of Saudi Arabia's first capital, is probably the most popular archaeological site in the country. Riyadh has plenty of beautiful contemporary hotels and shops, contrasted by nearby camel markets, all of which are fascinating to explore.
