Tokyo is a huge city with an intense energy all its own, though it also offers areas of peaceful tradition. Visitors and locals can enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor recreation and entertainment. Tokyo has restaurants to suit any taste, including food from all over the world, regardless of one's interest in traditional Japanese fare.
At the center of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace, where the Japanese emperor and the imperial family live. There are tours of the palace's surroundings most any time of year, and on special holidays, one can gain much closer access. The palace's East Garden is a quiet reprieve from Tokyo's bustling streets.
Ginza, an extremely popular area for fine shopping, features the Ginza Strip, where window-shopping and retail options abound. And for a very different experience, the nearby Ueno-koen Park is ideal for a relaxing walk where you can view temples and tour museums such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Tokyo National Museum.
In the Shinjuku district, a fast-paced and very populated area of Tokyo, the East End offers many opportunities for exploration. In general, throughout Tokyo's neighborhoods, there are specialty shops and busy restaurants open around the clock. There are plenty of theaters, concert halls, stadiums, sport facilities and spots for sightseeing, and Tokyo Disneyland and Disney Sea Resort offer fun for the entire family. The Japan Railways Yamanote line, encircling central Tokyo, is one's ticket to most anywhere in the vicinity.
