The Site—Heredia

The award-winning Intel campus in Costa Rica opened in March 1998. It is located in Heredia, just 12 miles (19 kilometers) west from the capital of San José, a bustling metropolis of one million people.
The facilities in La Ribera occupy 126 acres and include one manufacturing plant (CR1 and CR3) and one distribution center (CR2) dedicated to the assembly, testing and distribution of the world's fastest processors including the Intel® Xeon™ processor, Intel® Itanium® processor, and Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor. La Ribera is also home to shared service centers supporting several business groups including Finance, Information Technology, Procurement Operations, and LADS (Latin American Design Services).
In 2006 Intel Costa Rica opened the Ultra park campus (CRU) to host the operations of IT Enterprise Production Services (EPS). This group's capabilities include Office Service Desk, Global System Management, and Telecom Helpdesk. CRU is located at Ultra Park Free Trade Zone in Heredia, just 15 minutes away from La Ribera campus. There is a shuttle service available between the La Ribera campus and the Ultra Park campus, allowing employees to visit La Ribera to enjoy the recreational area and other benefits.
Intel Costa Rica is three-time winner of a Social Responsibility award given by the Costa Rican-American Chamber of Commerce and has been awarded with the National Safety Award for five years in a row. As a part of Social Responsibility programs, Intel Costa Rica inaugurated two Intel® Computer Clubhouses in 2002 and 2005. They provide young people a safe place to visit and learn about technology after school.
Intel Costa Rica operations have not only a positive impact in the social and educational area; but also affected Costa Rica’s economy. While high-quality coffee beans, bananas and textiles have historically been chief exports for Costa Rica, the current major export is computer chips, thanks to Intel's presence, which has initiated much economic growth and represent 20% of the total Costa Rica exports.

Enjoying Life in Costa Rica and Heredia

Often called the Switzerland of Central America, Costa Rica is a peaceful place with beautiful mountains and one of the best climates in the world (the average temperature is 22C/72F). Costa Rica is also one of the most politically and economically stable countries in Latin America and is its oldest democracy, with a long-standing democratic tradition and one of the highest education standards in the region. Bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panamá to the south, Costa Rica is proud of its more than 54 years without need for an army. Costa Rica's political and social model in last 50 years has dedicated many resources to providing its people access to free education and healthcare. Since the late 1980s, there has been great emphasis placed on computer technology accessibility in the educational system.
Costa Rica is a land of rich biodiversity. Volcanoes and mountains divide the country and extend the Andes-Sierra Madre chain, known as Cordillera Volcánica Central, spanning the western side of the Americas. The verdant Costa Rican landscape includes both Pacific and Caribbean coasts lined by dazzling beaches as well as lush tropical forests filled with 850 species of birds. This all makes Costa Rica a prime destination for eco-tourism and adventure travel.
Heredia is one of the seven Costa Rican provinces. It is one of Costa Rica’s larger cities and has a very elegant feel to it. Boasting nearly all the amenities that San José has to offer, this city is a great place to use as a base camp when touring Costa Rica. As with many Latin American towns founded during colonial times, the central square dominates the life of its people. Heredia has one of the nicest central parks in the country, filled with large towering trees, a covered bandstand, an impressive water fountain and plenty of benches. Known for its hills covered with coffee plantations and volcanic national parks, this mountainous region also has dense tropical forests, stunning waterfalls and roaring rivers that make it the ideal destination for those who wish to enjoy nature at its very best.
