The Site—Shanghai

Intel has three major operations in Shanghai, including manufacturing, labs, software development, and sales and marketing.
Shanghai Manufacturing Facilities
Intel Products (Shanghai) Ltd, Intel's manufacturing facility in China, is located in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone of Shanghai Pudong New Area. The current investment of $500 million (U.S) makes it the largest investment project in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone to date.
In the late 1990s, the Shanghai facility began assembling and testing Flash memory, one of the most advanced and widely used memory chips in the world. In 2001, it started assembling and testing Intel® 845 chipsets, the heart of the PC motherboard. The establishment of Intel Products (Shanghai) Ltd. is an important part of Intel's worldwide strategy and demonstrates Intel's long-term commitment to China. Its objective is to meet the worldwide demand for Flash memory and other integrated circuit products and grow into a world-class, high-tech production base.
We’re also doing some technology development, focusing on Flash silicon design, Chip package development, Desktop system development and Server power and thermal development. The establishment of Intel Products (Shanghai) Ltd. is an important part of Intel worldwide strategy and fully demonstrates Intel’s long term commitment of its China investment.
Software Lab
Intel China Software Lab (ICSL) in downtown Shanghai is part of Intel's worldwide research and design labs. Engineers from this lab work to create and enhance global value of Intel's silicon, platforms and solutions by delivering innovative software technology and quality products.

Staffed with more than 100 engineers, ICSL's goal is to build a first-class software lab focusing on:
  • Building expertise in BIOS and device drivers for Intel® architecture platforms
  • Establishing IA32 and IA64 Binary Translator skills
  • Providing DSP/Multimedia Libraries and an integrated performance tuning environment for the Intel® StrongARM * microprocessor and Intel® XScale* microarchitecture
  • Delivering optimized operating system ports and full sets of device drivers for Intel® XScale* microarchitecture
  • Enabling an Intel architecture/Linux-based solution stack for the telecommunication market
  • Developing signal integrity technology for a full solution of wide signal frequency range applications
  • Improving software development process quality

Enjoying life in Shanghai

Situated on the bank of the Yangtze River Delta in the south of China, Shanghai is the country's most comprehensive industrial and commercial city, ranking first in population and population density. It is a tourist city that attracts travelers from home and abroad. Shanghai is one of the nightlife capitals of China, with an incredible range of venues and activities, primarily along Hengshan Lu and Maoming Nan Lu in the French Concession area. As for karaoke, a favorite Chinese pastime, Cash Box is the most popular shop in Shanghai, with multiple branches scattered downtown.

There are many shopping facilities in Shanghai, and the selection of goods is nearly the same as that of any international city. Nanjing Lu, China's best-known shopping street, cuts from east to west through Shanghai and offers just about everything. Many bookstores can be found parallel to Nanjing Lu in Fuzhou Lu. Shanghai also offers plenty of fitness centers and gyms.

The Shanghai Museum was opened in 1996 to offer a spectacular collection of exhibits. Its 11 state-of-the-art galleries house China's first international-standard exhibits of paintings, bronzes, sculptures, ceramics, calligraphy, jade, Ming and Qing dynasty furniture, coins, seals and minority art. The bronze collection is reputedly the best in the world.

The Yangpu and Nanpu Bridges are the world's fourth longest and largest cable-stayed suspension bridges. Both of them have sidewalks and elevators for visitors. The Yuyuan Garden, located in the southern part of the city, is divided into five parts with 30 scenic spots, and is called the most magnificent rockery of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) in southeast China.
