The metropolitan area of Santiago offers many unique attractions. At the top of the list is the Palacio de Bellas Artes, designed and built in 1910 commemorating the centennial anniversary of the republic. Also, the beautiful Santo Domingo Church was built in 1747 as a Bavarian-Gothic art piece. The astonishing Santiago Cathedral began construction in 1541 and has undergone periodic restorations to adopt a classic and baroque style.
Another top attraction in Santiago is the Palacio Real de Aduana (or Tribunales Viejos), featuring the ceramics, paintings, sculptures and textiles of different pre-Colombian civilizations from Mexico to Chile. The Casa-Museum La Chascona de Pablo Neruda, once the home of Nobel Prize-winning writer Pablo Neruda, shares a variety of books, paintings and objects gathered throughout his life.
There are tours of the Palacio de Gobierno de Moneda (Coin Palace of the Government), where the Chilean government resides. Between April and November, residents and visitors can attend concerts at the Teatro Municipal (or Municipal Theater). Popular sports in Chile include squash, tennis, soccer, hockey and skiing.
