Madrid, the capital of Spain since 1562, is located in the very center of the Iberian Peninsula. Its high altitude and nearby mountain ranges allow for both pleasantly warm summers and relatively cold winters. Located on a plateau 2,120 feet above sea level, Madrid is the highest capital in Europe. Its nightlife is unrivaled for its sheer energy and variety.
There are many great monuments and museums throughout Madrid. Not-to-miss attractions include the Museo del Prado, full of Spanish art by Velázquez, Goya, El Greco and many more famous artists of varied backgrounds, along with the city's variety of other impressive galleries and art collections. The Paseo del Prado is the area where many of Spain's most important museums can be found, another one of which is the Thyssen-Bornemisza.
Besides being a largely cultural city, Madrid's nightlife and social scene offer overwhelming options. From cafes and restaurants to pubs to nightclubs, this lively city never seems to sleep. In the spring and summer, balmy evenings inspire people of all ages to lounge in the plentiful outdoor cafés late into the night.
