Opened in Saint Petersburg in July 2004, the Intel Research and Development Centre currently employs more than 100 specialists. Engineers conduct research and develop innovative software solutions for Internet-related technologies that help customers to harness the power of Intel® architecture.
Leveraging core competencies, the Saint Petersburg site focuses on such key technologies as:
- Dynamic Runtime Layer (DRL) that encompasses a wide area of joint activities to adopt and optimize various managed run time environment (MRTE) components for Intel architecture
- Communication technologies that enhance wireless communication
- Grid computing using distributed and parallel computations in an energy grid approach to optimize a programming environment
The Intel R&D Centre at Saint Petersburg works closely with the city universities to build a solid academic foundation that prepares information technology (IT) students for the IT industry. In 2004, the Mathematics-Mechanical department at the Saint Petersburg State opened a student research laboratory with the help of Intel Corporation. Opened in the fall of 2005, a new cross-university student lab enables students from different universities to work on the joint projects.
In the summer of 2005, Intel's Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr. Craig Barrett, visited Saint Petersburg to meet President Putin. During his visit to the Intel R&D Center, Dr Barrett recognized the successful work of the Saint Petersburg employees.
